Dark Heart of Magic by Jennifer Estep

Book Description

"Jennifer Estep is a genius!" --Simply Nerdy

Something Wicked This Way Comes . . .

As a thief, I stick to the shadows as much as possible. But when the head of the Sinclair Family picks me to compete in the Tournament of Blades, there's no escaping the spotlight--or the danger.

Even though he's my competition, Devon Sinclair thinks I have the best shot at winning what's supposed to be a friendly contest. But when the competitors start having mysterious "accidents," it looks like someone will do anything to win--no matter who they hurt.

As if I didn't have enough to worry about, mobster Victor Draconi is plotting against Devon and the rest of my friends, and someone's going around Cloudburst Falls murdering monsters. One thing's for sure. Sometimes, humans can be more monstrous than anything else...

My Thoughts:
I adore this new series by Estep!  Lila is slowly getting used to her gig as guard of the Sinclair Family.  The mob feuds make life interesting, but mostly it is keeping the monsters in their area happy.  At the moment, that is easier said than done.  Then she is picked as one of the members of the Family to compete in the Tournament of Blades.  When things start happening, Lila, Devon and Felix investigate and that leads to some scary moments and more danger than any of them expected.
I really like how kick butt Lila is.  She is a teenage girl but she has talents and more than just magical power.  I really like how she, Devon and Felix have almost a 'three musketeers' mentality.  Devon is strong and still completely into Lila.  Felix is still sneaking around and seeing his 'mystery girl'.  The tournament was awesome and I felt like I was there watching it all happen.  Meeting the new characters and the plot twists kept me interested and I cannot wait to see where it goes from here.
Absolutely a 5/5 for me.  I would read Cold Burn of Magic first just to get to know the characters and what has happened.
