The Wounded Heart by Adina Senft

Book Description:
When a business offer turns into something more personal, Amelia is torn between what logic tells her is right, and the desire of her heart.
A widow with two small children, Amelia Beiler is struggling to make ends meet. She is running her late husband's business, but it's not what she was raised to do, which is run a home. When she gets an offer for the business from Eli Fischer, she's only too relieved to consider it-especially when it looks like Eli's interest might include more than just the shop. But when she begins to experience strange physical symptoms and is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, it's difficult not to question God's will. If she pursues the treatment she believes in, she risks going under the bann. But how can she allow Eli to court her when she can't promise him a future?

My Thoughts:
This was a good book. Amelia is a single mother of two, trying to keep her late husband's business afloat. She is approached about selling her business by an outsider and it brings Eli Fischer asking about the same things...and more. She begins to feel numbness in her arm and is soon diagnosed with a debilitating disease. Eli is wanting more than just the shop but she doesn't feel she can offer more because of her illness.
The author does a great job with the characters. Each one is real, none of them are perfect and all are relateable. The fact that Amelia is a struggling single mother makes you feel her pain, not to mention when she is diagnosed! Eli is a strong man and you have to love him for being so solid. The support shown throughout the book by the town, friends and Eli just makes you feel warm!
I rate this a 4/5. It is a good Amish Fiction.

A Lancaster County Christmas by Suzanne Woods Fisher

Book Description:
Jaime and C. J. Fitzpatrick began their married life as most couples do--in love and looking forward to a bright future together. But four years later they've drifted apart and are almost ready to call it quits.
Mattie Riehl was hoping to give her husband Sol the Christmas gift they have both longed for--news that a baby was on the way. But as usual, she is disappointed. The holidays bring an acute awareness to Mattie that her dream of a big family isn't likely to become a reality.
Then a winter storm raging outside blows the Fitzpatricks into the Riehl home--and into a much slower pace of life. Can these two couples from different worlds help each other understand the true meaning of love this Christmas?
With her trademark plot twists and attention to detail, Suzanne Woods Fisher offers readers a beautiful Christmas story of love, forgiveness, and what truly matters in life.

My Thoughts:
I really liked this book. Two couples as different as can be are brought together through an interesting twist of events. Mattie has always wanted a house full of kids, but over the years it has become clear that is not God's plan. She and Sol have one very interesting son but Mattie is growing quite unsatisfied though she loves him dearly, she wants more. CJ and Jamie are on their way to a likely uncomfortable holiday when they get snowed in at the Riehl's Amish home and both couples will forever be changed.

I like that the author shows flaws in the marriages of both couples. It isn't that the Amish marriage is perfect, but that they have God that makes theirs a lasting relationship. CJ and Jamie's issues are mostly things that they could work out with a little help as long as they BOTH tried. The extra characters, like the nephew and son are well written and developed and just fit perfectly! It was a well written and a great 'happy ending' book.
I rate this a 4/5. It was a good quick read!

AW: What genera do you write and why?

Currently I writeNon-Fiction Inspirational. My focus in writingis to enrich the lives of my readers. I had a reader make this comment aboutCompletely Whole “It speaks” and that’s what I want it to do. I want them tocome away knowing that they have the ability to live a full enriched life.

I want tomake several impacts on readers: I write non-fiction inspirational books sothis means my books should have a lasting effect on a person’s spirit.Inspiring and encouraging them to pursue with passion a better fulfilled life.I want my writings to give strength, encouragement in the time of need.

AW: Tell us about your book…. Completely Whole, Aug 2010

Completely Whole brings to light those issues that have blocked our path tototal wholeness. Everyone desires to be whole and embedded within CompletelyWhole are keys that will assist the reader in identifying, facing andeventually conquering those places that have kept them from walking inwholeness. Areas that have been a constant struggle for one to obtain victory,be it forgiveness, substance abuse, divorce. Completely Whole deals with thewhole man spirit, soul and body.

AW: What was your inspiration for this book?

I decided to write Completely Whole because oftentimes, many people try to seekfulfillment from money, relationships, accomplishments, or material things.Others choose to cope with difficult problems by using drugs or alcohol, but they often come up short and soon have to realize that such things do notbring true happiness and fulfillment in life. In my book, I try to show peoplethe true meaning of living a whole life.

AW: What project(s) are you currently working on?

I have started writing my first Christian Fiction book series. My first book inthe Trinity Lakes series is titled: The Sanctuary. It will be released sometime next year. I’mexcited about this new journey God has me on. I’m looking forward to seeingwhat He is going to do through these next books.

AW: Do you have any advice for writers out there?

Threethings I would give new authors: First is to be patient. Connecting withyour audience and branding yourself will take time. Especially for new writers, the market is flooded with books for readers to choose from so by keeping thisin mind you must be able to patiently wait your time to shine.

Secondly: I would suggest promote, promote, promote. I can’t stress that enough. Your book/books will stay aliveas long as you keep them if front of your audience. No one is best suited thanyou to promote and market your products. If writing is your passion you willcontinue promoting and marketing your books even when it appears no one isbuying.

Thirdly: Use social networks to connectwith readers. By joining social networks it presents a platform for you toshare with your readers your events or next book release. Readers must be ableto find you either on your website or any social network you have joined.

AW: Where can we find you? (facebook, twitter, blog, website, etc)

There areexcerpts and reviews of my books on my website:

A Heart Revealed by Julie Lessman

Book Description:
Her heart is tied to a youthful vow . . . but can true love set it free?
Ten years ago, Emma Malloy fled Dublin for Boston as a battered woman, escaping the husband who scarred her beautiful face. The physical and emotional wounds have faded with time, and her life is finally full of purpose and free from the pain of her past. But when she falls for her friend Charity's handsome and charming brother, Sean O'Connor, fear and shame threaten to destroy her. Could Sean and Emma ever have a future together? Or is Emma doomed to live out the rest of her life denying the only true love she's ever known?
Filled with intense passion and longing, deception and revelation, A Heart Revealed will hold readers in its grip until the very last page.

My Thoughts:
Julie Lessman is a very talented author! This book picks up where the first book in the series leaves off (yet you can read it as a stand alone!). Emma has a less than perfect past, including an abusive man she thought she loved. Sean is set to be a bachelor and has some issues of his own. When Emma needs help in her store, her friend Charity is convinced Sean is the perfect man for the job...
I enjoyed both of these characters. Both Sean and Emily were so life like! We got to see a lot of characters from past books and I loved catching up with them. Also, the author isn't afraid to show the faith in her books and tackle some fairly hard subjects. The setting of the great depression was intriguing and very enlightening. I loved that the author showed how life isn't a bed of roses for believers, that they face the same problems as everyone else, they just have God to lean on and help them.
I rate this a 4/5. It was a wonderful book.

Sunrise at Sunset by Jaz Primo

Book Description:
When is a bloodthirsty predator the best protection against a psychotic killer?
When the predator is both a vampire...and the woman you love.

“We vampires are focused and tend to shape our own realities.”
My name is Katrina Rawlings, and I am a vampire. I declare that with neither pride nor ego. I am simply nature’s most dangerous predator. On occasion, it’s a very valuable quality. It helped me protect Caleb Taylor one day when he was very young. But that single, traumatic day is behind him now; wiped from his memory, or so I hope.
Caleb has finally matured into a rather striking young man, and believe me, I like what I see. I’ll readily admit that there are issues for us to confront and overcome, though a sense of mutual commitment isn’t one of them. I’m feeling hopeful for our future together, in fact. But an adversary from my past has returned to haunt me, and she’s trying to get back at me through Caleb. That was her first...and last...mistake. I’ll protect my Caleb at all costs, and I’ll make her regret the day she was born.
So, I suppose that I’m not just a vampire. I’m about to become someone’s worst nightmare!
My Thoughts:
This was a highly entertaining book. Katrina is a vampire and a bit tired of life. She makes some intriguing decisions that lead her to a house in the middle of the woods and there she meets a small boy, Caleb. She saves him but removes his memory of the events. Throughout his life, she keeps tabs on him and now that he is grown, it is time to check in, in person, one last time....except she never expected the intense feelings she would have for him! Now, she must once again keep him safe, this time from someone from her world...
I absolutely love that the roles in this book are reversed from the typical 'hero' book. Katrina is the kick butt, strong one while Caleb well, isn't. It took me a bit to get used to the switch and while Caleb isn't the 'strong' one in the relationship, he's not a wimp either. I like that the storyline just flows and drags you along for the ride. It is definitely the start to a good series and I'm ready for the next one :)
I rate this a 4/5. It is a good, original read.

Deadly Pursuit by Irene Hannon

Book Description:
As a social worker, Alison Taylor has a passion for protecting children and seeing that justice is served on their behalf. But when she starts getting harassing phone calls and bizarre "gifts," it seems she may be the one in need of protection. When her tormentor's attentions take a violent turn, her brother Cole comes to her aid, along with his new partner, an ex-Navy SEAL, Detective Mitch Morgan. As her relentless stalker turns up the heat, Mitch takes a personal interest in the case. Protecting Alison has become more than just a job--because his own happiness now depends on keeping her safe.

Chock full of nail-biting suspense and heart-melting romance, Deadly Pursuit is Irene Hannon's storytelling at its very best. Fans old and new will not want to miss the next story in this series starring siblings fighting for justice.

My Thoughts:
I was hooked at the start! Alison is a social worker...she is also the sister of two overly protective and overly involved brothers! Since her car accident and boyfriend's leaving, her brothers have taken a peculiar and annoying interest in her love life. Enter the newest addition to the town, Detective Mitch Morgan. Alison and Mitch initially see each other to 'help the other' but soon find a mutual attraction--and a stalker. It seems Alison has snared more than just Mitch's attention and now it is up to him to make sure she is safe!
I like that Alison is a strong, independent woman. She has been hurt badly in the past but hasn't closed herself from the possibility. Mitch is a man's man and former Navy SEAL and I love that he is considerate of Alison's hesitation in the new relationship. The two brother's and Liz being back in this book is just perfect. Plenty of action, suspense and just enough romance....this book has it all!
I rate this a 5/5. It is a wonderful book that I'll soon read again :)

Telling Lies by Cathi Stoler

Book Description:
How many lies does it take to get away with murder? Magazine Editor Laurel Imperiole is vacationing in Florence, Italy, with Aaron Gerrard, Chief of Detectives of New York City's 13th Precinct Identity Theft Squad. A chance encounter brings Laurel to a startling realization: she's just bumped into a dead man: Jeff Sargasso, an art dealer and husband of a close friend who supposedly died in the World Trade Center on 9/11. When he vanished, Sargasso had been brokering the sale of a priceless masterpiece that was lost during World War II to CEO Alfred Hammersmith and billionaire Miayamu Moto. Hammersmith perished along with Sargasso on 9/11, and it is believed that the access codes to the $15 million deposit--ten percent of the asking price--died with them. Could Sargasso have faked his own death to steal the money? The painting's whereabouts are unknown. Laurel enlists the help of private detective Helen McCorkendale, and together they follow the threads that lead from Florence, Italy, to New York. On the way, the women tangle with Israeli Mossad agent Lior Stern and several stop-at-nothing collectors. All are determined to have the painting for themselves. Ignoring Aaron's advice, Laurel puts their volatile relationship in jeopardy. As Helen and Laurel search for Sargasso, the painting and the money, they find themselves enmeshed in a sinister skein of lies that could end in death.

My Thoughts:
This was an intriguing read. Laurel, a magazine editor, is on vacation and in a museum all the way across the ocean in Italy when she runs into an old acquaintance. Nothing really shocking until she realizes, she realizes Jeff supposedly died in the 9/11 attacks! Now, she has to discover the truth of what happened, where some serious money has disappeared to and how it all centers around art. Using a PI friend, Helen, Laurel investigates all that is going on while her boyfriend, a NYC Police Officer and his FBI friend take the investigation on from a different angle.
I enjoyed Laurel's character. She was a strong, confident and a bit impulsive. Honestly, she did take a bit of warming up to, but I did grow to like her very much! The 'supporting' characters are entertaining. I liked the different aspects of the investigation and the fact that Laurel's character was driven by the need to find the truth for her friend as Jeff was a friend's husband. It shows loyalty. I thought the author did a great job with the 9/11 portion of the book. It wasn't central to the book but the tragedy did play a major role in the set up. There was action, mystery and plenty of entertainment in this book!
I rate this a 4/5. It was a good read and I'm ready to see more from this author.

The Lonely MIle by Allan Leverone

Book Description:
When struggling hardware store owner Bill Ferguson witnesses a kidnapping in progress, he reacts instinctively, breaking up the crime and saving a young girl. But the kidnapper, a sociopath known as the “I-90 Killer,” escapes and vows revenge, targeting Ferguson’s own daughter as his next victim. Now one terrified father must unravel a plot that may go much deeper than he realizes, racing against time to save his only child from an unthinkable fate.

My Thoughts:
This book grabbed me from the start. Bill Ferguson is a hero! He sees a kidnapping and thwarts the kidnapper. As a hero, he's just put his family in the psycho's sights! How do you stay one step ahead of a psycho?
The author did a wonderful job of making this story feel read. From the first scene, you ARE in the book. You understand the victim's confusion, the psycho's delusions, and the hero's terror. I enjoyed the alternating views, it made the characters more realistic and easier to understand. The ending was surprising and I enjoyed it. Can't wait to read more from this author.
I rate this a 5/5. It was a quick read but it will take you for a ride!

Whatnots And Doodads by Stacey Kennedy

Book Description
For Bryanna, a witch from the Asheville Coven, magic is on the fritz. Shunned by her coven and her boyfriend Layton for her unruly magic, she seeks a new life for herself. It just so happens, fate steps in and brings her to Strange Hollow--a place where being different is not only acceptable, but encouraged.

When Bryanna arrives in Strange Hollow, Zeke, a demon gone good, is burning with Hell’s fire over her. Not only has she set his world ablaze, but he’s found one soul he can save. He’s determined to free her from the insecurities that have damaged her soul.

Together they experience lava-hot passion as they weave their way through a tornado of emotions. But when Layton returns for her, will Zeke’s attempts to break the unworthy cage woven around her be enough to keep her in Strange Hollow forever?

My Thoughts:
This was a pretty good book. A quick read at around 60 pages but interesting. Bryanna is a confused witch. Her magic doesn't work right, her boyfriend is a jerk and she isn't sure of anything other than she wants to be anywhere but where she was! Along the 'escape' she meets Zeke, a demon, and is taken to Strange Hollow...where she feels free to be herself, but is that enough?
I enjoyed the town of 'misfits' that was Strange Hollow. I liked how the author described each one as different but not flawed. Bryanna was a good character, but I must say that Zeke was my favorite. A demon trying to be good? That was an interesting twist!
I rate this a 3/5. It was entertaining and I enjoyed it but I wanted more characters development. Disclaimer for my readers, this book has sex and 'language'.

Thank you to the author for the review copy of this book. I received this book in exchange for an honest opinion and the opinion stated above is 100% more.

Concrete Pearl by Vincent Zandri

Book Description:
Ava "Spike" Harrison might be a beautiful, classically schooled woman, but the single, 38 year old construction business owner is also plenty ballsy. Her late father taught her long ago how to handle the rough boys in an industry that's almost entirely filled with hard-boiled men on the make. But now, with "the business dad built" from the ground up failing due to an unusual series of job-site injuries and just plain bad luck, Spike has no choice but to take on one last project she believes can pull the fledgling commercial firm from the depths of almost certain bankruptcy and family shame: The Renovation of Albany PS 20.

Problem is, Spike had no choice but to take the job on the cheap or, what's known in the industry as, "at cost." To make matters worse, she's not only hired an asbestos removal contractor who, unbeknownst to her, low-balled his price, but she's advanced him $10Gs from her own dwindling cash account as a "good faith" incentive to beat the project deadline.

Now, when that same asbestos contractor goes missing and it's discovered by OSHA officials that he's cheated on the project exposing more than 300 students to deadly asbestos fibers for months, the ever responsible Spike takes matters into her own callused hands and goes in search of him. What she discovers along the way however, is a path paved with deception, greed, murder, and eventually, her own ultimate demise.

My Thoughts:
I really enjoyed this book! Spike is a woman living in a man's world, literally. She is running the construction business her late father left her and trying to keep it going. She has plenty of backbone and has no trouble dealing with the 'man's job'! She had to bid low on her latest job and now the contractor she got to remove the asbestos has disappeared! She is left holding the bag with his shoddy work and now is determined to find him!
I loved Spike. Such a strong female lead! Her search for the contractor leads her into sticky situations and a lot more than she'd ever dreamed. The author does a wonderful job of dragging you from scene to scene and taking you on a roller coaster ride. Mystery and thriller are intertwined well in this book and you won't want to put it down.
I rate this a 4/5. It was a great ride, I will say there was profanity, innuendo and violence so if you don't want to read a book with those elements, this isn't for you.

Thank you to the author for the review copy of this book. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.

Guestblogger author Kristie Cook

Good morning all! Please help me welcome author Kristie Cook :)

Guestblog:
Inspiration comes from a variety of sources, sometimes from the strangest conversations or places or from the smallest things. Big news stories have given me ideas and so have tiny little one-liners that most people might have missed. Snippets of overheard conversation can spark something in my mind and sometimes entire conversations with friends or family lead my mind to wander in new directions.

I don’t watch television, but my husband does. He especially enjoys the SyFy and History channels and will often give me detailed synopses of shows he’s watched. He also reads sci-fi and paranormal/urban fantasy and likes to talk about what he’s read. He enjoys playing the “what if” game with me, where we might say “what if the characters did this…” or “what if that really existed but in this time or that setting…” or “what if the writer took it in this direction…” Then we get into crazy conversations that end with me running for my notebook to jot down ideas.

Mental downtime usually results in me playing the “what if” game with myself. I love long motorcycle rides because I get to ride on the back and just let my mind wander. I’ve had many ideas while on the back of the bike.

Long walks are the same. I’ve taken walks around my neighborhood and have arrived home asking myself if I skipped a certain street. I’d remember making the turn but my mind apparently had been in other worlds because I couldn’t remember walking that entire block.

Some of my best ideas come in the shower. In fact, it’s standing under the flow of warm water when I’ve had the majority of my ideas. I wish they’d invent a waterproof computer or tablet that I could take in there with me or at least some waterproof paper and ink. But, then again, I may never get out.

Inspiration can come for entire stories but most often it’s for a character or a conversation or a scene. Sometimes it’s a general or basic idea that needs time to germinate into something more useful. Sometimes it’s a teeny thing—a line of dialogue or a cameo character—that instantly explodes or eventually grows into a major scene or a main character. Maybe into the premise for an entire novel or series.

The little seed of angels and demons had been planted in my mind back in 2001 or 2002, but it didn’t germinate and grow into something useful until a few years ago. At about that same time, I had delved back into reading for fun, returning to my favorite genres of contemporary fantasy and paranormal romance. A certain vampire book was huge then and one fan on one internet forum I came across swore the hero was real, which made me think, if he’s real, then the villains would have to be, too. And that one little comment by some stranger in some other part of the country led to the idea of a bestselling author learning that her mythical creatures truly existed and they were none too happy with her writing about them.

Inspiration flooded over me. I wanted to write fiction again (after about 16 years of barely dabbling in it), just for my own entertainment. I had these two concepts—angels and this fantasy author—but little more. But then a scene suddenly blossomed in my mind and I wrote it out. Then I had to find out how the characters came to this point. After many walks, showers and what-if games, I wrote an entire novel. Which eventually became two novels—Promise and Purpose. Which are just the beginning of a series—the Soul Savers Series.

I’d taken such a long break from fiction writing because about the time I became a “practical adult,” I’d decided I just didn’t have a novel in me. Inspiration eluded me. Now that I’ve discovered its hiding places, I don’t need to search for it anymore. It’s all around us in this world we live in. We just have to open our minds to it. And take lots of walks and showers.
