The Red Door Inn by Liz Johnson

The Red Door Inn (Prince Edward Island Dreams, #1)Book Description:
Marie Carrington is running from a host of bad memories. Broke and desperate, she's hoping to find safety and sanctuary on Prince Edward Island, where she reluctantly agrees to help decorate a renovated bed-and-breakfast before it opens for prime tourist season.
Seth Sloane didn't move three thousand miles to work on his uncle's B&B so he could babysit a woman with a taste for expensive antiques and a bewildering habit of jumping every time he brushes past her. He came to help restore the old Victorian--and to forget about the fiancée who broke his heart.
The only thing Marie and Seth agree on is that getting the Red Door Inn ready to open in just three months will take everything they've got. Can these two wounded souls find hope, healing, and perhaps a bit of romance on this beautiful island?
Step into the Red Door Inn, a lovely home away from home tucked along the north shore of fabled Prince Edward Island. It's a place where the wounded come to heal, the broken find forgiveness, and the lonely find a family. Won't you stay for the season?

My Thoughts:
This was a good 'deep' book.  Marie left to get away from memories and her father.  She has no money and no where to stay when she meets a man who offers her a place if she helps him and his nephew renovate a b&b.  Seth thinks his uncle is crazy to have offered a woman they don't know a place.  He is also hurting and trying to recover.  He and Marie agree on nothing and she is extremely apprehensive around him.  Both of them need to heal and maybe, they need each other for that process.
This author does a great job with this Island.  The descriptions and details make you feel like you are there living this.  I really liked Marie from the start.  She was hurting and I felt her pain.  Seth, I did like him, but to start out with, I wasn't sure that was going to be the case.  The other characters in the book aren't one-dimensional either, but well developed and intriguing.  I do want to see more from this place and these people!
It was a 4/5.  I will look for the next book from this author!

Annabel Lee by Mike Nappa

Annabel Lee (Coffey & Hill, #1)Book Description:
Fourteen miles east of Peachtree, Alabama, a secret is hidden. That secret's name is Annabel Lee Truckson, and even she doesn't know why her mysterious uncle has stowed her deep underground in a military-style bunker. He's left her with a few German words, a barely-controlled guard dog, and a single command: "Don't open that door for anybody, you got it? Not even me."
Above ground, a former Army sniper called The Mute and an enigmatic "Dr. Smith" know about the girl. As the race begins to find her, the tension builds. Who wants to set her free? Why does the other want to keep her captive forever? Who will reach her first?
Private investigators Trudi Coffey and Samuel Hill need to piece together the clues and stay alive long enough to retrieve the girl--before it's too late.

My Thoughts:
Wow!  I completely enjoyed this book.  Annabel Lee is a young girl who is the center of everything.  The thing is she doesn't know why she isn't supposed to open the bunker door, but her uncle was adamant about it.  The two groups looking for her are in a race to see who finds her first but with two completely different reasons.
This was my first book by this author, but it definitely won't be my last.  The story is fast-paced and I didn't want to put it down.  At the start, I wasn't sure of much of anything.  I would decide things were going to go one way, and wasn't even close.  My favorite character would have to be The Mute.  The others were well developed and well written.  Plenty of twists, a touch of romance, some violence and faith all round into a good book.
It was a 5/5 for me and I cannot wait to read the next in this series.

Thank you to the publisher for the review copy of this book.  I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.

Dear Readers,

I wrote Race the Darkness from start to finish three different times, with three different story lines, and with three different titles! The only thing that ever remained the same between the versions was Xander and Isleen. I believed in them and the story they wanted to tell. I hope you love reading about their tragedies and triumphs as much as I enjoyed writing them… All three times! And isn’t the cover amazing, beautiful, gorgeous? I cried the first time I saw it! It made all the hard work to get this book to you worth it!

P.S. I would love to connect with you and hear what you think about the cover! You can find me here:
An excerpt from Race the Darkness

No fucking way was he going to die running. He stopped, turned and faced the truck barreling toward them. The tires ate up the ground at an indecent rate. He clutched Isleen tighter to his chest. For her sake, he wanted it to be a quick death. No more lingering. No more pain.

That thought infuriated him. None of this was right. They shouldn’t be on the verge of death. Again.

The truck kept coming—twenty-five feet.

Everything slowed, happened as if through the quicksand of time. A white dandelion floaty meandered on the breeze directly between them and the truck. His heart no longer ran a staccato rhythm. Duh…duhm. Pause. Duh…duhm.

Pause.

His life didn’t flash before his eyes. The future did. Isleen’s future. In an ethereal dream beyond time, her skin was gilded by firelight, her eyes void of sadness and fear, her body whole and healthy. She smiled, an expression so full of warmth and tenderness and undiluted joy that it plunked itself down inside his heart and wouldn’t leave.

He ached to create that kind of smile on her face, but their lives were over and it all could’ve gone so differently if he’d only listened to her, believed in her, found her years before now.

Buried Secrets by Irene Hannon

Book Description:
After seven years as a Chicago homicide detective, Lisa Grant has hit a wall. Ready for a kinder, gentler life, she takes a job as a small-town police chief. But the discovery of a human skeleton by a construction crew at the edge of town taxes the resources of her department. A call for assistance brings detective Mac McGregor, an ex-Navy SEAL, to her doorstep. As they work to solve the mystery behind the unmarked grave, danger begins to shadow them. Someone doesn't want this dead person telling any tales--and will stop at nothing to make certain a life-shattering secret stays buried.

Master storyteller Irene Hannon is back with an exciting new series featuring former special forces operatives now in the thick of the action in civilian life. Hannon is at the top of her game in this can't-put-it-down thriller that will have readers up until the wee hours devouring every page.

My Thoughts:
Absolutely devoured this book.  Lisa Grant and Mac McGregor don't hit it off right away, but then again they met over a skeleton.  Lisa is the police chief and Mac is the detective County sent over to help her with the case.  Together they work to figure out who the skeleton belongs to and why it is buried.  Their mutual attraction cannot be denied but it can be put on hold until the case is over.  Only problem with that is there is a certain someone who doesn't want the case to ever be solved and is willing to do anything to keep it a 'cold case'.
Wow, I do love the wonderful mix Ms. Hannon puts into her books.  There is suspense, romance, mystery, faith and more.  Lisa is a strong lady.  She has to be to have been through what she has and still be the chief of police.  More than that, she is competent, caring and respected both as a woman and a professional.  Mac is a former SEAL who wants to settle down and lead a quieter life.  I loved how he didn't hide his feelings from Lisa but wasn't forcing himself on her either.  His brothers were some of my favorite characters!  Also loved Lisa's mom.
Absolutely a 5/5 for me.  Loved this book. Thank you to the publisher for the review copy of this book.  I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.

The Shock of Night by Patrick W. Carr

The Shock of Night (The Darkwater Saga, #1)Book Description:
When one man is brutally murdered and the priest he works for mortally wounded on the streets of Bunard, Willet Dura is called to investigate. Yet the clues to the crime lead to contradictions and questions without answers. As Willet begins to question the dying priest, the man pulls Willet close and screams in a foreign tongue. Then he dies without another word.
Willet returns to the city, no closer to answers than before, but his senses are skewed. People he touches appear to have a subtle shift, a twist seen at the edge of his vision, and it's as though he can see their deepest thoughts. In a world divided between haves and have-nots, gifted and common, Willet soon learns he's been passed the rarest gift of all: a gift that's not supposed to exist.
Now Willet must pursue the murderer still on the loose in Bunard even as he's pulled into a much more dangerous and epic conflict that threatens not only his city, but his entire world--a conflict that will force him to come to terms with his own tortured past if he wants to survive.

My Thoughts:
I have enjoyed books by this author before so I was thrilled to start a new series by him!  Willet is a detective or investigator (sort of).  He is called to investigate a murder and is given an unexpected and shocking gift.  He is still investigating the murder but there is much more going on than he had originally believed.
Ok, this book looks to be a long book, but once you start, it flies by!  I think Willet is amazingly written.  He is a smart, problem-solver which is exactly what he should be.  I wasn't sure how the Christian or Faith aspect would translate into the book but the author did a great job with it.  I think this could cross over into the 'regular' fantasy as well.  The world the author created is intriguing and he wove in mystery, romance, sword play and twists and turns.
It was a 5/5 for me.  I cannot wait to read the next book in this series.

Mirror World by John Calicchia

Mirror WorldBook Description:
What would you do if you could see the future in a mirror? Would you save those you love, or die trying?

When Cailyssa Larkin looks in a mirror she has an ominous feeling that someone is watching her. Stranger still, she has visions that foretell the future. With the future of her own world hanging in the balance, Cailyssa bravely enters the portal to the Mirror World. Here, the Dark Lord controls all the mirrors and bends reflections so all creatures see evil within themselves. With her sister Terry, her mysterious best friend Daemon, and a host of weird and wonderful creatures, Cailyssa embarks on an epic quest to overcome the evil forces trying to destroy her world. She can only defeat the Dark Lord by finding her true self and discovering the family secret that has led her to Mirror World.

This book, written by a psychology professor, integrates famous psychological studies in the story. Readers will enjoy learning important life lessons through the psychological concepts illustrated in the book.

My Thoughts:
I absolutely loved this books cover.  The story inside was good too!  Cailyssa has never liked looking into mirrors.  She always feels like she is being watched.  She also has visions of the future that often come true.  She goes to visit her uncle and looks into a mirror there and has a horrible vision.  Then she goes through a portal and into the mirror world.  There are all sorts of magical creatures in this world, some good and some not.  The Dark Lord is in control here.  Cailyssa realizes she must be the one to change the vision she saw to save both her world and the magical one she has entered.
Wow, the mind game this book plays is awesome.  I love that the mirror holds a different world that what you see (well at least for Cailyssa).  Going through the portal to change the future was very brave.  I liked how Cailyssa was a 'normal' girl who had issues and insecurities but was still going through with her mission.  She is strong and helped along the way by an intriguing cast of characters.  I wasn't sure about some of them, there was a surprise or two, but what I really liked was that once you start reading, you get sucked into the story and feel like you are really there with them!
It was a 5/5 for me.  I really couldn't put this one down.

Inside Man by Jeff Abbott

Description

Following AdrenalineThe Last Minute, and Downfall, Jeff Abbott returns with the next riveting novel in the award-winning New York Times bestselling Sam Capra series.

INSIDE MAN

Sam Capra's friend Steve has been murdered, shot dead in the rain outside of his Miami bar. The only lead: a mysterious, beautiful stranger Steve tried to protect. To avenge his friend, Sam goes undercover into the Varelas, one of Miami's most prominent and dangerous families.

Now on the inside, playing a part where one wrong move means death, Sam faces a powerful, unstable tycoon intent on dividing his business empire between his three very different children, who each may hold murderous secrets of their own.

Sam is relentlessly drawn into this family's intense drama, amplifying painful echoes of his own shattered relationships as a son, brother, father, and husband. And just when he thinks he understands why the family is self-destructing, he discovers a lethal secret so shocking that the Varelas cannot let him walk away alive . . .

My Thoughts:
This was a much anticipated 4th book in this series for me!  Sam Capra's life has settled into bar owning.  Then his friend Steve is murdered right outside his bar and he is going to find out who and why.  Steve was protecting a beautiful woman who has her own secrets.  Sam goes undercover to avenge his friend's death and winds up in the middle of a successful and dangerous family.  His investigation might be their undoing, and his!
I've loved Sam Capra from the first book.  His story is just so sad...and involved.  This time it is friendship that drives him to put himself in danger.  He assumes his alias Sam Chevalier and goes undercover in a dangerous family.  The action in this book is non-stop and the adventure is awesome!  Once you start the book, you won't want to put it down.  If you haven't read the first 3, I would (they are great books) and then this one, but this one can stand alone.
It was a 4/5 for me.  I couldn't wait to read this one!

NKJV Prophecy Study Bible

Book Description

he prophecies of the Bible assure us that God will prevail. The NKJV Prophecy Study Bible, 2015 Edition has hundreds of pages of special features that offer a broad understanding of prophetic themes, salvation, covenants, and other important doctrines of the Christian faith.

My Thoughts:
I really liked this Bible.  Quite a bit of the Bible is made of prophecies.  I didn't read the whole Bible, but I did flip to some of my favorite verses and looked around them at the tools and explanations.  I got started reading and I found the explanations and toos extremely helpful and learned some things I had never even considered.  The way it is arranged and explained, makes each prophecy easier to understand and while you can use individual verses and 'spin' them, I didn't see any of that in this Bible.
Overall, I completely and thoroughly enjoyed it and intend to keep it and make a full on study of it.  It was a 5/5 for me.
Thank you to the publisher for the review copy of this book (via BookLook).  I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
