A Killer Among Us by Lynette Eason

Book Description:
Kit Kenyon is a first-rate hostage negotiator. Noah Lambert is a good detective with excellent instincts. The new partners have hardly had time to get used to each other when they are thrown into a grisly murder case. As evidence mounts up and more victims are found, Kit and Noah realize they are on the hunt for a serial killer. The problem is, he's hunting one of them too.

With nail-biting suspense, clever plot twists, and a hint of sweet romance, A Killer Among Us is the latest thriller from Lynette Eason. It will keep readers up late as they race to discover the killer--and whether Kit and Noah will live to tell about it.

My Thoughts:
I LOVED this book. Kit has a new partner, Noah, who has a bit of a problem with female cops but they have finally come to an understanding. Now if Kit could only get her emotions to come to an understanding that Noah is her partner and nothing more, she'd be doing good! They are the lead investigators on a murder case that suddenly becomes two and before they have time to breath, they are on the hunt for a serial killer. Their investigation makes them a target of the psycho's rage, but does he have something even more twisted in mind for Kit?
Wow...I liked all the characters in this book. It was a realistic fiction and wonderfully refreshing. There wasn't one scene in the whole book that I couldn't see happening in real life! Kit is stubborn, has family issues, and is hopelessly attracted to her new partner. She is also a wonderful negotiator. Noah is a Christian, good cop and can't help but feel the attraction to his non-Christian partner Kit. Great suspense, awesome characters and lots of twists make this an amazing book!
I rate this book a 5/5. It is a great book!

Breath of Angel by Karyn Henley

Book Description:
The stranger’s cloak had fallen back, and with it, a long, white, blood-stained wing.
When Melaia, a young priestess, witnesses the gruesome murder of a stranger in the temple courtyard, age-old legends recited in song suddenly come to life. She discovers wings on the stranger, and the murderer takes the shape of both a hawk and a man.
Angels. Shape-shifters. Myths and stories—until now.
Melaia finds herself in the middle of a blood feud between two immortal brothers who destroyed the stairway to heaven, stranding angels in the earthly realm. When Melaia becomes a target, she finds refuge with a band of angels attempting to restore the stairway. But the restoration is impossible without settling an ancient debt—the “breath of angel, blood of man,” a payment that involves Melaia’s heart, soul, and destiny.

My Thoughts:
This was a good book. Melaia is a priestess who offers a stranger a place to stay only to witness his horrible murder! She chases off the murderer but when cleaning up the body, notices something rather disturbing....wings. She'd always believed the stories about them were more fairy tales but now is having to rethink everything she believed. She is thrown into the middle of a battle that she never knew existed and she may be the key to it's end!
Melaia was a great character. I wasn't sure how her indesision would work at the first but she turned out to be a strong character. The book started off with action, which I liked and kept you turning the pages to figure out exactly what was going on. I liked the different angels and their personalities and can't wait to read more from this author!
I rate this a 4/5. It is written more for young adults but all ages will enjoy!

Guestblogger Alexandrea Weis!!

Good morning all! I'm happy to introduce guestblogger of the day, the very talented author Alexandrea Weis! (Her latest book Recovery isreviewed below)
Welcome Alexandrea!

Guestblog:
My father had an independent production company in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Being raised in the motion picture business, I learned how to run sound, do basic cinematography, film editing, and to be an all-around gopher on the set. Sometimes, I even did some in front of the camera work as a bit player and background extra. Because of his work in movies, many creative people in the French Quarter gravitated toward my father’s Creole cottage on Dumaine Street. I grew up associating with Jazz musicians, actors, writers, and talented artists. But probably the person who influenced me most during that time was my father’s good friend, Tennessee Williams. He was a kind and patient man who would sit with me for hours discussing the intricacies of his writing. From him, I learned about character development and the value of good dialogue. He taught me how to build personalities into characters that would resonate with readers. He showed me the importance of searching for the right words to best reflect the idiosyncrisies of each and every character. Funny, how you can forget so much from so many, but I remember every bit of advice Tennessee Williams taught me.

Looking back, I can see the synchronicity of circumstance having set my course in this creative direction from a very early age. If I had not been born in the city of New Orleans to a motion picture making father, or raised amid the bohemian people of that uniquely eccentric society, I might not have evolved into the writer I am today. However, I did not always embrace my creative side, and for years pursued a career based in medicine and practical knowledge. But like pressurized lava simmering beneath the surface of some volcano, the innate creativity I was born with eventually came erupting to the surface. I finally let go of my apprehensions about turning away from my medical training and started to embrace my stifled urges. It was then I re-discovered my writing.

I came to realize that happiness is not found in living some monetary-based lifestyle, but in following a path that yields to the yearnings of your heart. We are all born to do something fortuitous on this planet; we just have to stop trying to wonder what that is, and just do what makes us happy. After all, happiness is always the outcome when you finally learn to follow your dreams.

Alexandrea Weis began writing at the age of eight. In college she studied nursing and went on to teach at a local university. After several years in the medical field, she decided to pick up the pen again and began her first novel To My Senses. Since that time she has writen several novels and sold two screenplays (White River and Blood Will Tell). Blood Will Tell is currently in pre-production with Buyer Group International. Her work has been critically acclaimed and is continually growing in popularity.
Her most recent book is Recovery, the second novel in the Nicci Beauvoir series which takes readers on a Big Easy thrill ride when a lover’s murder is solved and a spy with a bulletproof bravado quickens Nicci’s broken heart.
Alexandrea is also a permitted wildlife rehabber and works rescuing orphaned and injured animals. She recently has been working to aid oil soaked birds in the Gulf disaster.
You can visit Alexandrea’s website at www.alexandreaweis.com or connect with her on Twitter at www.twitter.com/alexandreaweis.com and Facebook at www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/pages/To-My-Senses/113609858681394.

Thank you for the guestblog, I love that thought...everyone has a path :) I look forward to many more great works from you!!

Recovery by Alexandrea Weis

Book Description:
Recovery by Alexandrea Weis is the second novel in the wildly sexy series featuring the enigmatic Nicci Beauvoir. A thrilling read, this character-driven book boasts a whodunit mystery, sultry seductions, and an unforgettable cliffhanging twist. Once a darling of New Orleans society, Nicci pens a novel about her departed love, the artist David Alexander. While promoting her book in the Big Apple, she’s approached by David’s former boss, Simon La Roy, who has a theory about David’s death that devastates Nicci. She learns David’s murder may be linked to someone from her past. Enter Dallas August, an elite member of Simon’s organization of corporate spies prized for his ruthless ability to get the job done. Playing the part of Nicci’s lover, Dallas returns to Katrina-ravaged New Orleans with her to flush out the killer. But everything is not what is seems in the Big Easy, and soon the couple finds themselves trapped in a psychotic’s twisted game of revenge. As the danger grows, Nicci’s relationship with the handsome spy turns from adversarial to amorous. On the run for their lives, Dallas and Nicci must confront their tormentor before it is too late. It’s a deadly decision that could cost Nicci everything, but it is her only chance for finally revealing the identity of the murderer. Just as the truth behind David’s death is discovered, another more compelling mystery is unearthed. It’s an unexpected turn of events that rocks Nicci’s world.

My Thoughts:
I very much enjoyed this book. I didn't realize it was the second about Nicci, but it stood alone wonderfully. Nicci's fiance was murdered and she has learned to cope. She wrote a book about Daniel and at a book signing, she is approached by Simon LeRoy who was Daniel's boss. After he reveals a lot of surprising details, Simon asks for her help in finding Daniel's murderer. She is paired up with Dallas, a seemingly cold man, and they go down to hurricane ripped New Orleans to find the murderer!
Nicci's character was my favorite. She has had her heart broken but still living and actually has a sense of humor. Dallas is a strong, supposed to be cold man, but Nicci realizes that is just what he shows the world, he really is a caring man. There are a lot of support characters you come to know and like. It is a fast paced read with lots of surprises revealed. The author did a wonderful job on character development and I can't wait to learn more about Nicci and 'meet' her again!
I rate this a 4/5. I'm going to pick up her first book soon!

The Poison of Thorns: The Dragon's Back #1 by Robert Dennis Wilson

Book Description:
"The Poison of Thorns [The Dragon's Back #1]" unfolds as an intriguing and action-packed Fantasy with bards, dragons, swords, and mysterious black-robed villains lurking in the shadows. [94K words]

Ten long years after the mysterious murder of their parents, two brothers have just been freed from incarceration in a prison-like orphanage. Against their wills they are torn apart and launched into separate quests against conflicting and dangerous forces. Independently they struggle to learn the truth and to resolve the unanswered cries for vengeance that have long consumed their lives with the poisoned thorns of unresolved bitterness. Finding themselves pitted against a strange and hostile world, overwhelmed with many questions; it becomes their individual obsessions to find the answers and rescue each other.
Why were they locked away in that out-of-the way orphanage for ten long years, when they had living kin who would gladly have claimed them? Who are the sinister black-robed “Dragonmen” and what is their hidden agenda. And why are these blackrobes so interested in the two teenaged brothers that they would mobilize all of their considerable resources to possess them?
What is the significance of the shape of their isolated continent? Is it true that it appears to be a gigantic Dragon floating above the endless depths? What about the rumors that man-sized, almost invisible dragons are stalking their nights?
And finally, who are the mysterious followers of the mythical Gryphon? Why do they alone, of all the diverse peoples of Dragonsback, have the ability to swim in the dark bottomless waters that surround their land? And most importantly, is the mysterious Swimmer who took part in the deaths of the boys' parents still available… for retribution?

My Thoughts:
This was a superbly written book. A good vs. evil that isn't too preachy but definitely has a spiritual overtone. Two brothers are finally free, but separated. There are two 'factions' the Dragonmen and the Swimmers. The Swimmers follow Gryphon and are good while the Dragonmen are evil. The two brothers don't know what is going on or why but each has to choose his own path....

Somewhat of the classic good v. evil with a twist. I like that the book is a Christian Fiction and isn't afraid to show it. The imagery the author used made you actually feel like you were a part of the book. The characters were very well developed and very likeable (well, except the ones you weren't supposed to like!). The book flowed very well and was just very well written.

I rate it a 5/5. If you get the chance, you should definitely read it and I'm ready for the second one!

Katie Lane's Going Cowboy Crazy & Make mine a Bad Boy

Make Mine a Bad Boy:
THERE'S A NEW BRIDE IN TOWN!
Hope Scroggs is finally ready to get hitched. After years of sowing her wild oats, the former head cheerleader and homecoming queen has returned to Bramble, Texas, to marry her high school flame. But her perfect wedding plans are stomped to smithereens when her adoring cowboy two-steps down the aisle with someone else. Now Hope is stuck with the one man from her past she can't shake: Colt Lomax, an irresistible bad boy whose sultry kisses are hotter than the Panhandle in August . . .

So, he piles on the Texas charm to tease the feisty beauty back into his bed, while she tries her darnedest to resist. But something unexpected is about to tie their fates together . . . and oh, baby, will it ever!

My Thoughts:
Both books were good. Going Cowboy Crazy is where Faith goes looking for a twin sister she never knew she had. Her mother's dying confession sends her from Chicago and her safe life to Texas where the cowboys run wild! The towns folks think she is their long lost Hope, coming back from California and she isn't very quick to set them straight, that is until she meets Slate.
I loved the chemistry between Slate and Faith and how she looks just like Hope but he never had those feelings for his friend. It is a very complicated relationship but they are determined, for the most part, to make it work. The town seems a bit over the top, but it also sounds like every small town I know. Overall a good book.
I rate it a 4/5. A good, quick romance read.

Make Mine a Bad Boy is Faith's twin sister Hope's story. Hope is upset that Faith is living HER life! Well that is until the town bad boy, Colt comes back and her world gets flipped upside down. Hot chemistry between the two of them is hot and heavy, even if they don't like each other. But some unsettling news forces the two to examine their 'hatred' a little more closely.
I like how Hope is a get it done kinda girl! She (at least to everyone else) knows what she wants and goes after it. Colt is the typical 'bad boy' with a chip on his shoulder even though he has done good things, he still wants to be the bad boy. Faith and Hope's relationship gets more interesting and the whole town is as nosy as ever!
Another 4/5. If you read the first, you gotta read the second :)

Contingency by Paula Wiseman

Book Description:
Where was God? Bobbi Molinsky's comfortable life is shattered when a forwarded email from her husband's account lands in her inbox. The email teases, "My whole evening is free again." After an angry confrontation with Chuck, she is left with the broken remains of an eighteen year marriage. Where is God? Bobbi agrees forgiving Chuck is the right thing, the God-honoring thing to do, but it leaves her empty and isolated. Teaching her second-graders is a burden. Taking care of her boys saps all her energy. It seems God Himself has walked away, leaving her to struggle alone. Is God faithful? Bobbi can't deny the transformation in Chuck, but genuine forgiveness requires trust, and trust is a risk she's not willing to take. Can she let go of her deepest, most primal fears and save her marriage?

My Thoughts:
I was shocked this is the author's first book! It is so well written and emotional!! After almost twenty years of marriage, Bobbi is devistated to find an email from her husband's lover. She confronts him and confirms her worst fears. She decides to do the Christian thing and forgive him, but deciding to and actually forgiving Chuck are two VERY different things. Through all this, she feels abandoned by God. Her life is stressful and it just seems like nothing is going the way it should so she wonders where God is when she needs him so badly...
You actually feel Bobbi's heartbreak and feelings of abandonment. The surprising thing is you also witness Chuck's transformation. The book switches from past to present to give you the whole story and shows Chuck is a jerk through most all of their marriage. Then, you can't deny he transforms, but not until after he does horrible damage to his wife! I also like that the book shows the far reaching effects of the adultry....it doesn't just affect Bobbi and Chuck but other people you would never have anticipated.
A wonderful Christian Fiction with real life applications throughout. 5/5 you should pick this up and read it today!

A Conflict of Interest by Adam Mitzner

Book Description:
Alex Miller is a criminal defense attorney and, at thirty-five, the youngest partner in one of the most powerful law firms in New York City. He's a man at the top of his game with the life he's always dreamed of, complete with a loving wife who remains patient with his long hours and high-stake cases, and a beautiful young daughter.
At his father's funeral, Alex meets Michael Ohlig -- a mysterious and nearly mythic figure in Miller family history -- who presents Alex with a surprising request: to represent him in a high profile criminal investigation. . .an alleged brokerage scam that has lost hundreds of millions of dollars for investors. Wealthy beyond words, Ohlig insists he's done nothing wrong, and Alex, who's experienced enough to know that clients always lie, uncharacteristically believes him.
But as the facts come out, shocking secrets are revealed that threaten everything Alex believes in -- about the law, his family, and himself. But his desperate need for the truth propels Alex to unscrupulous depths, and to confront a past defined by deception and a future in jeopardy. . . with the realization that one false step could destroy everything Alex holds dear.
In an electrifying debut the likes of which legal thriller fans have not seen since Scott Turow's pulse-pounding thriller Presumed Innocent, Adam Mitzner tells a stunning story of suspense that heralds a bold new voice in fiction.

My Thoughts:
This was a good book. Alex is home for his father's funeral when he meets his father's best friend Michael Ohlig. Michael had always been more of a fictional character to Alex than a real person but meeting him starts a new chapter in Alex's life. Alex is an attorney with a big firm in New York and Michael approaches him about representing him. Alex lands the 'big new client' and gets one of the top associates to help him do the research and necessary work to prove Michael innocent but the questions just start piling up!
I liked Michael Ohlig the most. He is a very self-assured man who knows what he wants and yet he isn't self centered. Alex is a good attorney, partner in the firm but meeting Michael makes some serious changes in his life. There were several unexpected twists and lots of surprises! The description of the legal work that had to be done was so detailed and real that you felt you were in the middle of the case with them!
This is a 4/5. A good, legal thriller.

Guest Bogger Kevin Villegas!

Hello all! We are back up and going...please help me in welcoming guesblogger/author Kevin Villegas!!

Guest Blog:
Elves!

Without a doubt Elves are the most recognized fantastic race from Fantasy Novels (no knock on dwarves). Every author has their own take on Elves and Elven society. I have chosen to take a different approach with the Elves in my novel “The Sunwright Chronicles – Empire at War.” There are three sources of inspiration for the society I created for the Elves. The foremost influence would be from “The Simarillion” written by J.R.R. Tolkien. I have always liked the way Tolkien designed the Elven race known as the Noldor. A race of Elves that would be decimated by war, though generally peaceful they also had a good edge.

Never afraid to meet their enemy in battle I’ve always envied the Noldor. The other two influences are real world, I like to study history and have always been fascinated by Athenian and Spartan cultures. In creating the Elves of Garion I have melded all three influences together and created a special society.

So what sets my Elves apart? No pointed ears! Yes you read that right. The Elves of Garion do not have pointed ears. It can be hard to tell the difference between an Elf and say a human Kirmarian. The notable differences would be: The Elves tend to be taller, they have slightly raised cheekbones, their complexion is fair.

Besides physical appearance the Elves of Garion while peaceful have a very martial side. They maintain a large professional army, and they are actively engaged in regional diplomacy. In essence my elves are not a shy demure race by any means. They are not a shy introverted society, The Elves of Garion are a power player in their region of Tera, and a strong steadfast ally of the Empire of Kirmar.

The Sunwright Chronicles: Empire At War:
Crisis engulfs the Empire of Kirmar. Barbarians from the east have poured through the borders of the Empire and threaten to capture the imperial capital. In addition to the invasion mysterious agents flood the Empire seeking to destabilize the already weakened state. To make matters worse Paris along with his wife Suadela have mysteriously vanished leaving their children Tobias, Calia and Pershing to face the current crisis alone. Luckily for the Empire of Kirmar the Sunwright children are more than ready for the challenge that faces them.
But will the united strength of the Sunwright children be enough to save the Empire of Kirmar? As the barbarians continue to push their advantage love and romance blooms in the most unlikely places. A sleeping giant in the Elven nation of Garion is wakened by the immediate danger facing Kirmar, will the Elves support Kirmar as they have done many times before? In the south the Empire of Imaldris formerly a part of the Empire of Kirmar is facing its own troubles. A weak Emperor has allowed the nation of Nazzir a long time enemy of the Empire to grow in power.
Even in these dark times there is always hope. A struggling Empire which has stood for nine hundred years is forced to come together to face the greatest crisis it has ever seen.

Kevin's Bio:

Murder is a Family Business by Heather Haven

Book Description
Just because a man cheats on his wife and makes Danny DeVito look tall, dark and handsome, is that any reason to kill him? The reluctant and quirky PI, Lee Alvarez doesn't think so. But the 34-year old ½ Latina, ½ WASP and 100% detective has her work cut out for her when the man is murdered on her watch. Of all the nerve. Set in the present, Murder is a Family Business is the first in a series of humorous mysteries revolving around Lee Alvarez, a combination of Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Millhone and Janet Evanovitch’ Stephanie Plum, and rest of the Alvarez Family, detectives all. Seemingly light and frothy on the surface, the novel nevertheless explores familial love, the good, the bad and the annoying.

Completing the family is Lee’s Never-Had-A-Bad-Hair-Day aristocratic mother, Lila; computer genius brother, Richard; beloved uncle “Tio;” and her energetic orange and white cat, Tugger. When this group is not solving murders, they run Discretionary Inquiries, a successful Silicon Valley agency that normally deals with the theft of computer software. The love, humor and camaraderie shared within this family are what set this series apart from others.

My Thoughts:
This was an enjoyable 'whodunit' book! Lee's family is a business....well they are in the PI business together anyway! Mostly they investigate corporate crime and white collar things. Lee gets handed the assignment of following her mother's friend's husband because the friend is certain he is cheating. This leads to a soaking stakeout, kitten and dead body! Now Lee is determined to find who killed said husband and why.
Lee was a wonderful character! She's of mixed heritage and her mother's blue blood doesn't like a lot of her characteristics but they are some of the best ones. I loved that while in a rain storm, Lee is in designer clothes and the details the author uses about those. The fact that her family works together and has to deal with family business along with 'family business' and are a bit dysfunctional just makes them more realistic. Her mother is great because she is just so blue blood'. All in all, wonderful characters and a good mystery.
I rate this book a 4/5. It has tone of humor throughout so they mystery doesn't get too heavy and I can't wait to read (hopefully) the next installment in this series!

Dark Descendant by Jenna Black

Book Description:
Nikki Glass thinks of herself as an ordinary person, although her skills as a private investigator sometimes verge on the uncanny. But whatever Nikki might think of herself, she is far from ordinary, as she discovers one life-altering night when she loses control of her car on an icy road, accidentally killing a man who appears out of nowhere. The man Nikki struck with her car was an immortal who wanted to die -- and she has now inadvertently stolen his immortality. As a descendant of the Greek goddess Artemis, Nikki’s talents have reached supernatural proportions. Of course, before she was an immortal, there wasn’t anyone who wanted her dead .

My Thoughts:
This was a pretty good book. Nikki is a PI who is on a horrible date when a client calls needing help. She practically jumps at the easy out of the date and drives to meet him. Along the way, a man steps in front of her car and the crash is horrible, but not as bad as after! She is bleeding and hurting when three men she knows from surveillance show up and knock her out. When she comes to, she is told the man killed was an immortal and now she has his immortality...oh and there is a group that will do whatever it takes to have her!
I liked Nikki. She acted exactly how any normal human being would given the circumstances and the Liberi just seemed annoyed by her. There are sons and daughters of gods, gods, major conflict, and suspense everywhere. I loved all the characters, though some of the scenes were a bit 'shocking' they fit in perfectly with how the author was telling the story. I am ready for the next in this series.
4/5. Definitely a good fantasy read with some serious dark parts!

Blood Covenant by Lisa Harris

Book Description
From the explosive first pages, Lisa Harris weaves a tale of heart-stopping suspense and adventure with her second book in the Mission Hope Series. When fighting erupts between government forces and renegade Ghost Soldiers deep within the Republic of Dhambizao, thousands are forced to leave their homes. Dr. Paige Ryan, who works with Volunteers of Hope International, is sent to lead a team to set up a refugee transit site---where the immediate needs for shelter, water, sanitation, and food are critical. Nick Gilbert, a bush pilot for Compassion Air, joins the team to help fly supplies in and out of the area. With the refugee camp already experiencing overcrowding, raids, and uprisings, a group of American mountain climbers is attacked by the Ghost Soldiers. Paige's medical team responds immediately, rescuing survivors and taking them into the camp. When it's discovered that one of the trekkers is carrying an infectious disease, the harrowing conditions of the camp are forgotten. In desperate need of vaccines and the Ghost Soldiers blocking the only road out until their demands for amnesty are met, it won't be long before the disease is out of control ... and there is nowhere to run.

My Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this book. Paige is a doctor working to help the situation in Africa. She is set to go home and is asked to set up a site that is in desperate need of help. Nick is a pilot The Ghost Soldiers want their voices heard and to get attention, they attack a group of American mountain climbers. With the situation as tense and extreme as it is, Paige has no choice but to bring the climbers into the camp, only to discover one of them has a disease that if they can't find a way to get the cure!
I love how the author made the situations and characters so real! Paige, you could really feel her plight at wanting to do more for these poor people, but having to realize she is doing as much as she can. It has suspense, faith, and enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. I wasn't sure how the book would end but I'm glad that it wasn't a magical 'happily ever after' but more of a realistic ending.

4/5. This was a good, Christian Fiction that showed real life possibilities.
