With Autumn's Return by Amanda Cabot

With Autumn's Return (Westward Winds, #3)Book Description:
Elizabeth Harding arrives in Cheyenne, Wyoming, to establish her medical practice thanks to the wooing of her two older sisters who extolled the beauty of the land. She's certain she'll have a line of patients eager for her expertise and gentle bedside manner. However, she soon discovers the town and its older doctor may not welcome a new physician. Even more frustrating, the handsome young attorney next door may not be ready for the idea of a woman doctor. For his part, Jason Nordling has nothing against women, but he's promised himself that the woman he marries will be a full-time mother.

Despite their firm principles, Elizabeth and Jason find that mutual attraction--and disdain from the community--is drawing them ever closer. And when the two find themselves working to save the life and tattered reputation of a local woman, they'll have to decide how far they're willing to go to find justice--and true love.

My Thoughts:
This was a good book.  Elizabeth moves to Cheyenne to be closer to her two sisters.  She is a doctor and sets up practice there, expecting the 'progressive' city to be welcoming.  It isn't and she doesn't have a single patient.  In fact, the older doctor in town is badmouthing her and with her two sisters traveling, she is discouraged.  Jason is an attorney who just happens to be next door.  He is a bachelor with set ideas on what he wants in his woman.  They may both change their minds as they get closer.
With this being the third book in the series, it was nice to be back for a visit.  Elizabeth was certainly a fun character.  She was stubborn and feisty, but also sensitive and great bedside manner.  I liked how a woman doctor was shocking and even offensive to some (as we now find it a normality).  It is interesting to see how far we have come.  I also was amused by Jason's preconceived ideas about the woman he would marry....and how Elizabeth didn't fit that mold at all!
I rate this a 4/5.  Nice conclusion to this series.

Thank you to the publisher for the review copy of this book.  I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.

  7. There does seem to be a distinct draw towards proving people wrong when they don't approve of a relationship, doesn't there!! The book review is great!

  10. It wasn't all that long ago when women became nurses--never doctors and their professions stopped once they started a family. It is just the way it was-and I am so glad it has changed!!

  30. Ashley -- Thanks so much for your review. I had a lot of fun giving Elizabeth a profession that was considered shocking in the era, although I have to admit that some of the research I did about nineteenth century medical practices made me shudder. Bleeding, purging and blistering -- no thanks!
