Countryside The Tears of Adina by J.T. Cope IV

Countryside: The Tears of Adina (Countryside, #2)Book Description:
Luke Rayburn has spent summer vacation running up and down sandy beaches with his family. He’s explored hidden coves, learned how to write invisible letters, and even met an ocean nymph. But his friends write to tell him of strange happenings in Countryside and he’s anxious to get back.
When Luke returns, he finds that much has changed. Mischievous gnomes are spreading chaos across the valley, a lone wolf haunts the forests, and Mayeem, one of Luke’s new teachers, just happens to be a mermaid. And then there’s the hunter, a man with golden eyes, only part of a soul and the belief that Luke has hidden something he wants—something he’s willing to destroy Countryside in order to get.
Hounded by blackhearted men and soulless creatures and with darkness luring him in, Luke must gather his wits and ferret out his true friends. But as he draws close to finding what it is the hunter seeks, he will learn that there is more at stake than he understands. He’ll learn that it’s not the hunter he should be afraid of and that, once done, some things cannot be undone.

My Thoughts:
I was so excited to get back to Countryside.  This book starts a little bit after the first book ends.  Luke and his family have been on vacation but unexpectedly decide to end it early and return to Countryside.  When they get back, Luke finds out that all sorts of strange things have been going on.  There are gnomes acting crazy, wolves, and then a hunter who wants something from Luke himself!  Luke has no clue what he wants but he has to find out before all of Countryside is destroyed!
I really do adore Luke!  He has changed so much since the start of the first book.  I also love how the different friends and family are all written into the book and have their own special roles to play.  The place itself, Countryside, seems very much like a place I would love to visit, even with its issues.  I can picture it as I read the pages of the story.  I thought since this is a young adult book, I would be able to guess/figure it out quickly and easily but not so much!  The author did a good job with the story line and kept me guessing.  I cannot wait to see what happens next.
This is a 5/5 for me.  It is second in the series so read the first one first but once you do, you will have to read this!

Always Watching by Lynette Eason

Always Watching (Elite Guardians, #1)Book Description:
The bodyguards of Elite Guardians Agency have more than just skill and prowess in common--they're also all women. When it becomes clear that popular psychiatrist and radio personality Wade Savage has a stalker, his father secretly hires Elite Guardians in order to protect his son.

But when Wade's bodyguard is attacked and nearly killed, agency owner Olivia Edwards must step in and fill the gap. Olivia's skills are about to be tested to the limit as Wade's stalker moves from leaving innocent gifts at his door to threatening those closest to him. Olivia has the feeling that she's next on the list. And to complicate things even further, she realizes that her heart may be in as much danger as her client.

My Thoughts:
Great start to a fascinating new series by a very talented author.  Elite Guards is an uncommon bodyguard agency, most especially because all the bodyguards are women.  When Wade Savage, a radio personality, has a stalker, Olivia must protect him.  The stalker evolves quickly and Olivia becomes a target too!  The danger gets closer and so do Wade and Olivia.
I thought this concept was original, the guards being all women.  The man wasn't weak, in fact Wade is a good character.  He needs Olivia's expertise but she needs him as well.  I think my favorite character was Wade's daughter.  She has her issues but I really enjoyed the way Olivia related to her.  The action was there, suspense, and romance all mixed together to make a good story.
It was a 5/5 for me.  I thought it was a great book.

The Prophetess by Jill Eileen Smith

The Prophetess: Deborah's Story (Daughters of the Promised Land, #2)Book Description:
Outspoken and fearless, Deborah has faith in God but struggles to see the potential her own life holds. As an Israelite woman, she'll marry, have a family, and seek to teach her children about Adonai--and those tasks seem to be more than enough to occupy her time. But God has another plan for her. Israel has been under the near constant terror of Canaan's armies for twenty years, and now God has called Deborah to deliver her people from this oppression. Will her family understand? Will her people even believe God's calling on her life? And can the menace of Canaan be stopped?

My Thoughts:
I liked this elaboration on Deborah's story.  The author tells a story about how Deborah could have been.  She was a 'typical' Israelite woman, except she wasn't.  God had plans for her and she follows His calling.  With all the threats of war and the battles going on, it is difficult, especially as a woman.
I honestly wasn't certain I would like this book at the beginning.  I was wondering where the author was taking parts, but I have to say, she pulled it all together and answered my questions.  Deborah was a strong and wonderfully Godly woman.  I wish I had her strength.  The war going on was absolutely terrifying and God still used her.  The secondary story lines were as good as the overall story to me.
It was a 4/5.  I will absolutely read the next book by this author.

Soul Meaning by A.D. Starrling

Soul Meaning AudiobookBook Description:
From the award-winning series Seventeen comes a high-octane, action-packed twist on immortality.
"My name is Lucas Soul. Today, I died again. This is my 15th death in the last 450 years."
Soul is an outcast of the immortal societies. Born of a Bastian mother and a Crovir father, a half breed whose very existence is abhorred by the two races, he spends the first 350 years of his life being chased and killed by the Hunters.
One fall night in Boston, the Hunt starts again, resulting in Soul's 15th death and triggering a chain of events that sends him on the run with Reid Hasley, a former US Marine and his human business partner of 10 years.
From Paris to Prague, their search for answers will lead them deep into the immortal societies and bring them face to face with someone from Soul's past. Shocking secrets are uncovered and fresh allies come to the fore as they attempt to put a stop to a new and terrifying threat to both immortals and humans.
Time is running out for Soul. Can he get to the truth before his 17th death, protect the ones he loves and prevent another immortal war?

My Thoughts:
This book has plenty of action!  Lucas is a half-breed.  He constantly has people trying to kill him and has actually had them succeed on several occasions! As an immortal, he comes back each time...so far.  He and his business partner, Reid are best friends, and in a race to find answers to questions.  After years of leaving him alone, why are the hunters after him again.  Each answer leads to more questions and terrifying possibilities.
The author did a great job with this book and I also really liked the narrator's voice.  The fact that immortals weren't completely immortal, intrigued me and I loved that idea.  The action in this book is non-stop.  If I were an immortal trying to escape another death, I would want someone like Reid to have my back!  There is a little of everything in this book.  Besides the action, there is scifi, romance, history, and much more.
This was a 4/5 for me and I think a very promising start to a new series!

Kynan by Desirae Grove

Kynan (The Regiville Tales, Book Two)Book Description:
This is the second book from The Regiville Tales, a series of full-length novels by Desirae Grove. Each book in this series can be read as a stand-alone, with its own HEA and no cliffhangers!
Elysa Jordan is a feisty and adventurous college student. She’s curvy and never shy about it, and no man has ever been able to resist her charms. Except for one: Kynan Gattesky. He insists they can't be together, yet he seems crazy about her.
Their on and off romance has been driving her nuts, and even Elysa is no longer sure if Kye is the right man for her. She sets out to seduce him one last time, but what happens on that fateful night unravels a whole sequence of events entirely out of her control...and puts her life in grave danger.
Kynan Gattesky has never thought he would fall for a human woman. His family has warned him - werepanthers and other creatures do not mix well. But Elysa is not someone he can get out of his mind easily. Every time he's around her, his common sense flies out the window. And when her life is jeopardized by a series of unfortunate poor decisions, he must rescue her, at all costs.
Will Kye and Elysa manage to get away from the dangers of Regiville paranormal world? And will their growing love survive it all?

My Thoughts:
Here kitty, kitty, kitty!  Kynan was raised to stay away from humans and definitely never fall for one.  He is a panther and they are solitary animals who only get together to...well, ya know.  Elysa wants Kye so bad that she can't even stand it.  Maybe she could make him jealous or lure him back with her feminine whiles.  When she is beyond frustrated with him, she does something insanely serious and her life is put in danger.
I'm so glad that we got to go back to Regiville to see what happens between Elysa and Kye!  I thought for sure they were doomed at the end of the last book but was happy to see that wasn't the case.  Kye  is a good, bad boy.  I love how he is determined to be one way because of what he is, but doesn't really feel that way.  Elysa is going to get her man, even if it kills her.  Sometimes I guess it really does take something drastic to get two people together.
4/5 for me, I was so happy to see this book.  It didn't disappoint.

The Fire Inside by Michelle Bellon

The Fire InsideBook Description:
Aiden, a doting husband and father, had the perfect life - a job he loved, a beautiful son, and a loving wife. In an instant, everything is taken from him and Aiden believes his life is over. Falling into a deep depression Aiden all but gives up on his job, his friends and himself. But when a mysterious force grants him the power to heal those around him, Aiden is forced to pull himself out of his misery in favor of the greater good. When he meets Ryan, a hardened, pessimistic teenager living on the streets, and Norma, a woman whose marriage is crumbling around her, Aiden acknowledges that maybe life still has a purpose and this ability to heal may be more powerful than he ever imagined.

My Thoughts:
This was a intriguing read.  Aiden's life is over in his mind.  He lost his wife and son so he has given up.  Ryan has to hide that her mother left.  Norma is a lady who wants children desperately and is fixated on that.  Three strangers who all need healing.
I like that the book is unique.  I felt so terrible about Aiden's family and how life spiraled from there.  I was drawn to Norma wanting children so bad.  Ryan's story was heartbreaking as well.  All three of these people so hurt and broken with there different problems was so sad.  Then it turned into a heartwarming story and I really enjoyed the characters and how the story went.
It was a 3/5 for me.  It was a good, quick read but completely predictable.

You and Only You by Sharon Sala

Description

Welcome to Book One in the Blessings, Georgia series (Previously titled The Curl Up and Dye) of Southern contemporary romance from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Sharon Sala. With the support of her handsome, unassuming friend Mike Dalton, LilyAnne Bronte is finally ready to put the past in the past.
It's never too late
Mike Dalton has secretly loved LilyAnn Bronte since they were all children together in the small town of Blessings, Georgia. But one fateful day T.J. Lachlan roars into town and starts showering LilyAnn with his charm, and Mike feels his dream of them being more than friends slipping away.
To find the love you missed
LilyAnn, as anyone in Blessings will tell you, let herself go after her fiancée was killed in Iraq. The attention of the handsome new guy shocks her into a revelation: she's ready to live again, and maybe the best is yet to come. The thing is, everybody in Blessings is sure it's Mike and LilyAnn who belong together-and they're willing to do whatever it takes to make LilyAnn realize the love of her life has been by her side all along.
My Thoughts:
I read this originally when it was The Curl Up and Dye.  I reread my review for it and find that even on a second read, nothing has changed except maybe it was a bit sweeter since I already knew the characters!
This was a good one!  When her fiance was killed in Iraq, LilyAnn let herself go.  She didn't take care of herself, her hair, her clothes...nothing!  When a new guy comes to town and LilyAnn is attracted to him, she decides to change all that.  Mike has always been a friend, even at the worst of times.  He has always loved her but if he doesn't step up his game, he realizes he may lose her forever.
I want a neighbor like Mike!  He is buff, caring, attentive...just wow!  I liked how he didn't let LilyAnn get away with putting herself down.  LilyAnn was a good character.  She was a bit dense, especially not seeing how Mike loved her, but as they say 'love is blind'.  Mike noticing all the changes to LilyAnn should have been a big clue for her, but it goes to show how we put people in certain categories and just leave them there.  He was protective of her and wasn't fooled by the new guy in town!  Good, sweet story.
This was a 4/5.  It was a good book that I will read again.

Wolf Trouble by Paige Tyler

Book Description:
He's in trouble with a capital T...

There's never been a female on the Dallas SWAT team and Senior Corporal Xander Riggs prefers it that way. The elite pack of alpha male wolfshifters is no place for a woman. But Khaki Blake is no ordinary woman.

When Khaki walks through the door attractive as hell and smelling like heaven, Xander doesn't know what the heck to do. Worse, she's put under his command and Xander's protective instincts go on high alert. When things start heating up both on and off the clock, it's almost impossible to keep their heads in the game and their hands off each other...

My Thoughts:
I love shifters! Khaki is going to be on the Dallas SWAT team!  It is a completely unique team made up entirely of male wolf shifters.  She is the first female shifter any of them have ever known and the first female at all on the team.  Everyone is a bit on edge wondering how she will affect the dynamic of the pack.  Then she meets Xander, and everything changes for both of them.  Xander doesn't want to be her commanding officer and she doesn't understand why, nor does she understand why she wants to be with him all the time.
Completely in love with Xander.  He is a jerk to Khaki, but doesn't mean to be.  He takes his leadership seriously and wants his team to succeed.  Not to mention he is insanely attracted to her!  Their relationship is amazing.  Watching Khaki's skills develop and her come into her powers is completely awesome. I did love spending more time with the Dallas SWAT team.  They are just the best!
This was a good one.  Solid 4/5 for me.

Kissed by a Cowboy by Debra Clopton

Kissed by a CowboyBook Description:
Having lived through her parents’ endless string of “matrimonial bliss gone wrong,” Cassidy Starr knows when the odds are not in her favor. Divorced and humiliated, her faith on rocky ground, Cassidy is through with love. She’s been bucked o_ that horse far too many times. Instead, she returns to Wishing Springs, Texas, and the rundown farm she’s inherited from her great aunt Roxie. She’ll reopen the strawberry farm and a bed & breakfast and follow in her aunt’s footsteps, remaining forever-independent, happy . . . and single.
Rancher Jarrod Monahan’s hands are full running the ranch, looking after his ailing grandfather, and chasing down a group of rustlers on the loose. He’s pushed his longing for a family to the bottom of his list of priorities. Besides, he was in love once but ran scared and lost his shot at happiness. But suddenly, the biggest regret of his life has moved in next door with a wounded heart, determined to become a spinster . . . and that’s a challenge that Jarrod can’t pass up.
Jarrod sets his mind to breaking down the walls around Cassidy’s stubborn heart. How can he show her that a cowboy’s kiss lasts forever? For the good folks of Wishing Springs, falling in love has never been so much fun to witness.

My Thoughts:
I enjoyed this book.  It is the 3rd in a series, but reads well as a stand alone.  Cassidy is done with love.  Her parent's marriage should have given her enough warning but then her own marriage/divorce makes her determined to stay single.  She moved home to Texas and is going to restore aunt Roxie's farm.  Jarrod runs his farm, takes care of his grandfather and is trying to catch rustlers.  There is no time for love in his schedule.  That is until Cassidy moves back to town and he is set on changing her mind about love.
I liked Cassidy.  She is a spunky, good-hearted woman.  Being burned as badly as she was by love, I can understand wanting to live life the way she chooses.  Jarrod is a cowboy.  Yep, a good Texas boy who wants the woman next door just like he always has.  His family is an interesting mix and I plan to read the previous 2 books in this series.  Overall it is a good, fun book to read.
It is a 4/5 for me.

The Last Dinner Party by Carly M. Duncan

The Last Dinner PartyBook Description:
When Jeanie D'Alisa is found murdered in her bedroom after hosting a dinner party in her home, detectives Anna Cole and Kristy Hicks are called to investigate the crime. Known within her community for her generous, yet unpredictable nature, Jeanie's secrets unfold as family, friends and neighbors become suspects. Anna and Kristy discover stamped passport pages revealing travels unknown and a curious relationship between Jeanie and the charming salesman who frequents the apartment building. Meryl, Jeanie's devoted and needy friend, further complicates the investigation when she phones Jeanie's sister who is studying abroad and lies to her about the cause of death. Through a muddied pool of misdirection and betrayal, will Anna and Kristy be able to assemble the clues in order to bring Jeanie's killer to justice? The path to solving the mystery becomes tangled with faces of loved ones who are revealed to be foes in this story about the lengths people will go to in order to save themselves.

My Thoughts:
This one may just surprise you.  Jeanie is found murdered after a dinner party.  She seems to be loved by everyone, or is that just an act?  Anna and Kristy are brought in to investigate and they have plenty of suspects.  The investigation throws them curve balls and misdirection is everywhere.
I really liked Anna and Kristy and their dynamic but they weren't without their issues.  I thought the mix of characters was interesting.  I wasn't certain who the murderer was but there were some characters that were just rotten.  The story flowed pretty well and I can honestly say I got invested in the story and was ready to know exactly what happened.
It was a 4/5 for me.  I enjoyed the mystery and author's writing style.

Joint Investigation by Terri Reed

Book Description

LONE AGENT

Under other circumstances, FBI agent Samantha Bennett might welcome a bit of backup—but not from an overprotective Mountie. She's been on the trail of a serial killer for six months and no one has ever taken the case seriously…until now. When Royal Canadian Mounted Police inspector Drew Kelley saves her life, he decides that the hunt for "Birdman" is his problem, too. Together they begin a cross-continent chase to stop the madman before he strikes again. However, Samantha fears her growing feelings for the lawman may weaken her focus, or worse—put Drew directly in the killer's sights…

Northern Border Patrol: Keeping the U.S.–Canadian border safe

My Thoughts:
I completely enjoyed this book.  Sami is an FBI agent on a mission.  The mission that Canadian Mounted Police Inspector Drew Kelley interrupts.  Sami is upset with Drew in the beginning but then more information comes to light and she owes him her life.  The serial killer she is chasing has set his sights on Sami and Drew is determined to keep her safe and help her solve the mystery before one or both of them wind up the next victim!
I really liked Sami! She is a tough, smart lady with serious nerve.  She and Drew both have had bad relationships in the past so both of them have problems trusting.  I love how Drew is a 'knight in shining armor' but still trusts that Sami will have his back.  They are a great fit but neither of them jump into the romantic part of the relationship.  They are partners, friends and it evolves quickly but it isn't an instant 'boom' they are together thing.  The story is disturbing and realistic and the bad guy completely believable.
It was a 4/5 for me.  I really love this author's writing.
