A Billion Reasons Why by Kristin Bilerbeck

Book Description:
He's a handsome billionaire. She's not impressed. — Katie McKenna has never loved any man but one: billionaire Luc DeForges. He was her first love. But there are a billion reasons why she's engaged instead to Dexter Hastings, a solid and stable man who wants the same things she does: marriage and a family but all of the things that she wants without the deep-seeded pain and fear of being abandoned that Luc brings.
Dexter and she have worked an arrangement that's akin to faith without action, love without deeds -- a dead faith. Going home to New Orleans to sing for her childhood friend's wedding, Katie must search her heart to find out if any of her reasons for being with Dexter are stronger than love. Only when Katie steps fully into faith and jumps off the cliff of life into the arms of Luc does she understand the fullness of God's grace.
My Thoughts:
This was a good book. Katie isn't the girl she used to be and that isn't what Luc wanted to see when he stepped into her classroom. He wanted the vibrant girl he fell in love with to still exist but it seems it is his fault she is living as a shell of her former self and is to marry the boring Dexter. Katie isn't happy with Luc's appearance or his interference in her life. She wants her ring and to be engaged to Dexter and live a 'safe' life she has planned....or does she?
I enjoyed the exchanges between Katie and Luc. He has a lot to make up for but everyone seems to look down on Katie for what happened between them. Now that she is back home, she realizes what she is missing. Dexter is a bore. I didn't care for him at all, but that was the point of this character! It was a great, quick read that kept my attention and I enjoyed the characters very much!
I rate this book a 4/5. It was a good, fun read that is entertaining and I love the 1940's modernized!

Guest Blogger Nora Weston w/Contest!

Hi Everyone! Please join me in welcoming my guestblogger today Nora Weston!

Guest Blog:

Writer and Editor: One Head-Two Hats
The act of writing, whether it's poetry, a short story, or a novel is an exhilarating blast to the brain...a true rush that can easily devour six hours and make it feel like six seconds. If you enjoy writing, then I know you know exactly how that feels. After many months of creative energy going into my “baby,” at long last...I type the final word letting out a sigh of relief, and rest with a smile on my face.
I allow that smile to linger for about three seconds, close the file, and then I toss my writer's hat into a wall. Usually, I allow...at the very least, a few weeks to pass before I begrudgingly place my editor's hat on. I love writing, but editing is a tedious task that requires huge amounts of patience, and it must be done before a publisher sees the end result of my project.
“Oh, come on...,” you say. “How much of a difference does editing make anyway? Don't publishers have professional editors?”
Sure, publishers do have professional editors, but they will not rewrite your story or fix every typo they come upon. Publishers expect a clean manuscript, so editing is an absolute must if you want to get published.
For example, in Guardian 2632, which is a Sci-Fi adventure/romance, time travel is a major part of the plot. Originally, Chapter one began in the year 2489 with a tragedy on the spaceship Alliance, which had docked at Naissance Portal 1/Miyamoto Crater, Mars. Zane Grayson, the protagonist, in the year 2632, was illegally time surfing in order to find clues about the incident from the past. Time travel and how it came about at Guardian TMF (time monitoring facility) was discussed in chapter three. It came off reading like a history lesson...no action and no dialogue.
While I was wearing my writer's hat, that was fine; however, to the horror of my editor's eyes...it all had to be killed. Deleted forever...I then had to rework Guardian 2632. This meant using Guardian TMF's history as a means to bring a prologue to life with characters, action, and dialogue. That edit made me realize everything in Guardian 2632 that read like my high school history book, had to be assassinated as well. A killing spree of approximately 7500 words occurred, but from the ashes Captain John Paul Jones, aboard the ship Bonhomme Richard, arose to argue with Captain Richard Pearson aboard the British ship H.M. S. Serapis on September 23, 1779. A time traveling mission to aid Alexander the Great, at the Battle of Gaugamela, also replaced a scene that was all tell...no show.
Therefore, when that sigh of relief has filtered through your lips and you shove your writer's hat to the floor because your masterpiece, your baby is complete, remember to rest that brain and gather energy. Then, put on your editor's hat and have it. You'll be glad you did.
What have you done, not as a writer, but as your own editor to improve your work? I write...a lot, and then edit. Do you edit as you go along? Feel free to share your tips.
Thanks for visiting!

Guardian 2632:
Dr. Zane Grayson, the most accomplished executive director Guardian TMF has ever seen, is breaking the law…his law against time surfing. Zane has the supreme power, in 2632, to decide which paradoxes in time need altered, or deleted, but he’s frustrated. Something, or someone, is missing from his life.
Time surfing in illegal time zones is the rush Zane can’t live without. As addictive as the Martian dust called kilred, time surfing becomes Zane’s obsession. And knowing full well if caught by the Elite Guardians, he’ll suffer an unwelcome death by Time Mercs, Zane still dives deep into trouble. Soon, he discovers a mission in 2035 left him trapped in a timehole. This timehole places him in Pittsburgh, PA in 1998, instead of home. In Pittsburgh, Zane strolls into a coffee shop to see the bewitching Julia Emerson. From that point on, his life spirals out of control as he fights to protect what he loves most.
It’s possible Zane’s future is no longer in 2632…but actually in 1998. Guardian 2632 reveals what a man will sacrifice to save a life. This is the amazing story of Dr. Zane Grayson.
Guardian 2632 is for adults. It’s comparable to a movie rating of “R,” due to violence, language, and adult situations.

An Unlikely Blessing by Judy Baer

Book Description
Meet Alex Armstrong, new pastor and lifelong city dweller, who has just accepted his first parish assignment, a small parish in the wilds of North Dakota. Hilltop Township, a farming community, blooms from the prairie like a wild pink rose lovely and prickly, much like the quirky residents. Pastor Alex quickly learns that this lovely place is in peril; many of the farmers are struggling to make ends meet. As he settles into life on the prairie, he begins to experience a lot of new things like the annual Hunter's Breakfast, julebukking (also called Christmas fooling), and King Oscar's fish balls. Not to mention the excitement the single pastor creates among the unmarried women in the community! Alex soon discovers that his new church home has as much to teach him and he will teach them, providing all with An Unlikely Blessing!
My Thoughts:
This is a good read. Alex Armstrong is a pastor who has reluctantly accepted his first parish in North Dakota. He is a city boy and it doesn't seem likely he will make it well up there. When he gets there, he realizes the community is having problems. Farmers are close to losing their farms, he stirs up a frenzy with the single women and he starts to feel at home in the wilds of North Dakota. He begins to believe he was sent there to help the community in its time of need!
Alex was a wonderful character. He was warm and caring and did his best to help the members of his community. The people of the community are all very interesting and I look forward to learning more about them. The story draws you in and before you know it, it's over! I am looking forward to the next in this series.
I rate this a 4/5. It is a 'leisurely' book that isn't fast paced but keeps your attention with wonderful characters.

A Heartbeat Away by Michael Palmer

Book Description: RELEASED TODAY!!!!!
The New York Times bestselling author and master of suspense delivers another novel at the crossroads of politics and medicine in this shocker of a thriller
On the night of the State of the Union address, President James Allaire expects to give the speech of his career. But no one anticipates the terrifying turn of events that forces him to quarantine everyone in the Capitol building. A terrorist group calling itself “Genesis” has unleashed WRX3883, a deadly, highly contagious virus, into the building. No one fully knows the deadly effect of the germ except for the team responsible for its development—a team headed by Allaire, himself. The only one who might be able to help is virologist Griffin Rhodes, currently in solitary confinement in a maximum security federal prison for alleged terrorist acts, including the attempted theft of WRX3883 from the lab where he worked. Rhodes has no idea why he has been arrested, but when Allaire offers to free him in exchange for his help combating the virus, he reluctantly agrees to do what he can to support the government that has imprisoned him without apparent cause.
Meanwhile, every single person in line for presidential succession is trapped inside the Capitol—every person except one: the Director of Homeland Security, who is safely at home in Minnesota, having been selected as the “Designated Survivor” for this event. With enemies both named and unnamed closing in, and the security of the nation at stake, Griff must unravel the mysteries of WRX3883 without violating his pledge as a scientist to use no animal testing in his experiments…and time is running out.
Tense, thrilling, and entirely plausible, A Heartbeat Away will make you reflect, wonder, and be truly afraid.

My Thoughts:
Wow! I completely enjoyed this book. Genesis is a group that is terrorizing the United States. The president's State of the Union address is always a much anticipated event and President Allaire's is no exception. Tickets are much sought after and people are proud to be there. Just as he is starting his speech, Genesis releases WRX3883, a deadly virus into the room that holds almost the whole line of presidential successors! Allaire is the only one that understands the ramifications of this virus and the man he believes to be his only hope is in maximum security for the theft of the virus, Griffin Rhodes.
I liked how quick this book was! You can't stop turning the pages because you have to know what is going to happen next and if the virus will kill everyone. The subplots are intriguing and lead you to believe a 'red herring' and I so fell for it! The medical mixed with the political was a nice touch, there was a lot of research involved here. I also appreciated the list of presidential successors at the front to know exactly which character when into what slot.
This is a 5/5. If you like suspense, you will enjoy this book!

My Thoughts:
These were good books. In 'A Thousand Tomorrows', Cody Gunner is the best bull rider around. He uses bull riding as a release for his anger toward his parents. His father left because Cody's younger brother has Down Syndrome and Cody has always blamed his mother for his father not staying. He meets Ali, who is a kindred spirit with a big secret. Their likeness draws them together even as her secret will tear them apart.

In 'Just Beyond the Clouds' continues Cody's story. He is back home, trying to figure out where life is going to take him and make some tough life choices. He wants to care for Carl Joseph, his brother, and is angered to find that Elly, Carl's teacher is teaching him to live independently. Feelings develop between Cody and Elly but both are afraid to persue them in case they get their hearts broken, and what would it do to Carl if they had a relationship?

I fell in love with Cody. He made such an amazing transformation in the first book. His love for Ali was so strong and pure, just amazing! I knew what was coming but still cried at the ending. In the second book, Cody just became an even better man. His love for his brother was great, his relationship with Elly was complicated and Kingsbury did a great job working through all of the 'issues' while educating us about the diseases in the stories.

5/5. These books are great, any woman would love to read them. Beware, they will make you cry!

My Thoughts:
This book was ok. Lady Honor is engaged to the Marquis of Mandeville. She is the sister to a duke, been raised her whole life to be a lady and is completely and totally attracted to her future brother in law. She and Lord Reeding meet under 'delicate' circumstances and neither can get the other out of their mind. When Reeding's faults are brought to light, will it run Hero off or will she be drawn in even more by his rakish ways?
The author did a good job with the characters. They were believable and I really liked several of them. I completely disliked Mandeville, he was a pompous jerk! Reeding and Honor defiantly had a spark between them but I just wasn't drawn into the story or to the characters. I did like the ending of the book though, I thought it was the perfect ending.
This book was a 3/5. It was an ok read but not great.

Deadly Heat & Deadly Lies by Cynthia Eden

Book Description:

My Thoughts:
I liked the story of this book. Lora Spade is a firefighter who has called in the SSD to investigate a series of arson fires where there are victims trapped. She and FBI SSD agent Kenton Lake meet under stressful circumstances and she punches him! Kenton is immediately drawn to Lora but in his investigation he can't afford to trust anyone but his team. Unfortunately his attempt to make the arsonist focus on him has brought the man to Lora's doorstep. Now he has to focus on keeping Lora safe while trying to control the raging passion between them!
The story itself was good. I really didn't care for all the F*bombs through the book. I thought they were a bit much and actually detracted from the story, but if you can get past those, the actual story was interesting and suspenseful. I thought I had the arsonist figured out from the beginning but the author had me guessing wrong! Lora and Lake have a very hot romance with sparks constantly.
I rate this book a 3/5. Lots of f*bombs and sex scenes but good story line.

I enjoyed this book. Sam is a member of the elite SSD unit of the FBI. She is still fragile from her 'death' experience with the watchman and needs a place to feel safe. She finds this in the arms of a one night stand, Max. The problem is she can't get over him and comes back for more. Then, the unthinkable happens and Max's family gets brought into her current investigation and she and Max have to work together to try to save his brother's life!
I completely loved Sam's character. She has been hurt and you can feel her hesitation and yet she is so strong! Max is a 'man's man' and you automatically are drawn to him. The two of them have a hot attraction and seem to just click. The support characters are great and their characters get developed even more. It is an interesting journey.
This book is a 4/5. Good story but be warned lots of hot sex scenes.

Thank you to Hachette for the review copies of these books. I received these books in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
