Risk it All by Katie Ruggle

Book Description:
Cara Pax never wanted to be a bounty hunter. She's happy to leave chasing criminals and tackling skips to her sisters. But if she wants her dreams of escaping the family business to come true, she's got one last job to finish... Only problem is, she doesn't think her bounty is guilty.
Henry Kavenski is a man with innocence to prove. When he realizes that Cara believes him, he'll do anything to keep her out of harm's way. Escaping criminals and dodging cops might not be the best time to fall in love, but Henry and Cara won't give up, not when there's a chance at a new life ahead—if they can survive the fall.

My Thoughts:
I really enjoyed this book. I like the Pax sisters from the first book and this one focuses on Cara. She isn't like her rough and tumble sister from the first book but more of a researcher. The sisters' interactions were still great but seemed lesser in this book than the previous book. I love how they all stick up for one another and have each other's backs.  That is how family should be.
Henry was a quirky character and I enjoyed getting to know him. The author did a good job with how the characters met and came together. I liked both Cara and Henry so their story was fun to read. Of course there were plenty of adventures because Cara is in the bounty hunting business. I enjoyed the twist at the end that I hadn't figured out!
It was a 4/5 for me.  I can't wait to see what happens next with these sisters.

Dragon Mist by David Burnett

Dragon Mist: A Paranormal RomanceBook Description:

As the third daughter of a third daughter, dragon-shifter Christine Drachen must mate with a human. Not all human males are genetically compatible with dragon shifters, and suitable matches are rare in old Charleston. Christine, though, has identified James to be an appropriate match. Even humans who acknowledge the possibility of dragons cannot believe that one can be both a dragon and a human, shifting between the two. As a result, Christine must attract James without fully revealing her true, shifting nature until they have committed to mate. Christine shows James the gold dragon she always wears around her neck. He notices the prints, statues, and tapestries of dragons that decorate her family's home. Strange noises emanate from behind the Drachens' house during a party, and James believes he actually sees a dragon, one wearing a necklace like Christine's. Christine's last name, Drachen, means "dragon," and, while she jokes her entire family is composed of the creatures, James begins to suspect there is more to what she says than a simple attempt at humor. Finally, he sees her shift. To protect their species from persecution, dragon-shifters silence any human who sees one of them shift, and the most practical method is generally death. The rule is absolute. But Christine has fallen in love with James. How can she protect her family without killing the boy she loves?Dragon Mist is a story of boy-meets-girl, with a few non-human characters, high stakes, a bit of magic, a little humor, and an abundance of romance.

My Thoughts:
This was an interesting read.  It absolutely caught my attention at the start and then kept it.  I wasn't expecting the bang it started off with but it was very effective.  The story had a mix of fantasy, romance, suspense and paranormal elements.  I liked Christine.  She is finding herself and is powerful.
They have a rule that any human who sees them shift into dragon form has to be silenced.  That becomes an issue when she falls for a human and he sees her shift.  I enjoyed the entire story and thought the author was really creative.  It will stay on my keeper shelf as a 'anti-typical' boy meets girl story!
It was a 4/5 for me.

Daring Provocation by Heather Renee

Daring Provocation (Shadow Veil Academy Book 3)Book Description:
Sometimes patience isn't a virtue.

Facing off with Malina didn't go quite how Raegan hoped, but she isn't one to give up easily. Now, she's back at school and more than eager to do whatever is necessary in order to protect those she loves most.

When a team is assembled and training begins in class, Raegan and Enzo grow closer than ever, but their happily-ever-after isn't within their grasp just yet. As one obstacle after another appears in their path, it will take ever bit of patience Raegan doesn't have in order to make it through.

With the final showdown drawing near, their team travels to New Orleans in hopes of keeping the battle away from school, but even then, the collateral damage might be more than any of them could have ever predicted. With more than one life at risk, Raegan will be forced to make choices she might never be able to recover from.

My Thoughts:
I couldn't wait to get this book. The previous two in the series ended on cliffhangers and I HAD to know what happened to the characters that I had grown to love. I love the way the author added in New Orleans with it's unique flare and people. I love New Orleans so that was a major plus for me. Raegan is worried about someone else she loves being hurt or killed by Malina again so she wants to go on the offensive.
I loved catching back up with what was going on in the characters lives and seeing how much they had changed over the series. Not to mention meeting some new ones that instantly snagged my heart. The author did a wonderful job of pulling in all the characters and a couple of big twists that I didn't see coming.  There were a couple of twists that even made me cry!! I've come to really love the characters she has created in this series and hope that there is more, maybe a spin off about her Raegan's best friend or aunt (just a hint Heather!!!).
It was a 5/5 for me. Read the series in order though!

Court of Blood and Void by Meg Xuemeix narrated by Victorie Mei

A Court of Blood and Void: A Reverse Harem Fantasy Romance audiobook cover artPublisher's Summary

They call me beautiful. They call me a monster. Soon, they'll call me death.
As a direct descendant of the God of Death, Cassandra Saélihn is considered the most dangerous monster of all time. Her own mother locks her in a cage to protect the world from her. Cass thought this jail would be her world for a lifetime, but then four sexy, formidable warriors - a vampire lord, twin fae princes, and a demigod - find her.
They claim she's not a monster, but a powerful weapon. The Olympian gods have begun to destroy the Earth with a vengeance, and only she can stop and kill them. But Cass has a mind of her own and can't be told what to do, no matter how drawn she is to her four warrior saviors. To their dismay, the four warriors can't tame the wild, cunning, and volatile Cass. But they have a bigger problem - their growing attraction toward her.
To turn the woman they desire into the ultimate weapon and ensure Earth's survival, they'll have to conquer her body and heart, which seems even harder than winning the war against the atrocious gods. But nothing turns these alpha males on more than an impossible dare. And nothing turns Cass on more than being stalked.

Warning: This is a full-length reverse harem fantasy/paranormal romance that features one hell of strong woman and her four powerful supernatural mates. It contains brutal battles, explicit love scenes, raw language, magic, sword fights, Greek gods, dark fae, vampires, and shifters.

My Thoughts:
I was excited to read this book but honestly, it was not my cup of tea. Cass, our main character, is just a foul mouthed brat. From the way she has been treated by her mother, I can understand having walls up and not trusting easily. Still, she had a horrible mouth and was completely full of herself. She is rescued and treats them horribly. Of course, there is a reason she is rescued and that is because of what they hope she can do for them but they force nothing.
The narrator did a good job with the voices and making them come to life. Each of the characters had their own voice and personality through her. The men of the book were interesting and (of course) all hot. I just couldn't get past her to enjoy them.
As a book, it was a 1-2/5, the narrator did a good job and I would rate her a 3/5.

Helix by Mary Ting

HelixBook Description:
Alliances are forming. The resistance is growing. Everything is about to change.
With her memory still fragmented, Ava returns to the International Sensory Assassin Network (ISAN) to find the twin sister she never knew she had.
But as Ava hunts for information, she finds herself tangled in a web of yet more lies and conspiracy. The Helix serum may not be required to access her superpowers, and the number of male assassins—previously considered too volatile to tolerate Helix—is growing in every territory.
The more Ava uncovers, the more of a threat she becomes to ISAN. Her only salvation may be to join the rebels—if she isn’t killed first.
My Thoughts:
I cannot tell you how excited I was for this book. The first book was amazing but ended with lots of questions (so you should absolutely read it first). Ava is still strong and determined. She is back with her ISAN team but she has a secret mission that none of them know about. I love her interaction with her team, they are close and she is determined to protect them. She is always thinking of others over herself and I admire that.
Where the first book set up the action, Helix sped up the momentum. I love how determined Rhett is to help Ava and to have her back in his life. The team there is so close, they are family. There are a whole new series of characters to get to know and determine if you should trust or not. There are some that I love and some that I'm still reserving judgment on. Overall it was a great book.  I cannot wait to see where Mary Ting takes these characters next.
Absolutely a 5/5.

Midnight on the River Grey by Abigail Wilson

About the Book

Book: Midnight on the River Grey
Author: Abigail Wilson
Genre: Historical Romance/Mystery
Midnight on the River GreyRelease date: July 2, 2019
Abigail Wilson returns to Regency England with another tale of murder, mystery, and romance.
After her elder brother’s mysterious death, Rebecca Hunter vows to expose the man she believes responsible-Mr. Lewis Browning-known by the locals as the Midnight Devil and by Rebecca as her new guardian. He alone was on the bridge that fateful night and openly admits striking her brother with his horse, but he claims he remembers little else.
Summoned to his reclusive country estate to await her London season, Rebecca plans her own secret investigation. Yet, Lewis Browning is not as she once imagined, and his motivation is horribly unclear. Recurrent nightmares and Rebecca’s restless feelings are further complicated by the shadow of her mother’s prior descent into madness and whether she too will follow the same heartbreaking path.
Even as midnight rides, strange injuries, and further murders lead back to Lewis, Rebecca can’t ignore the subtle turn of her heart. Has she developed feelings for the man she swore to see hanged? And moreover, can she trust him with her uncertain future?
 My Thoughts:
This was a book that I just couldn't put down. Rebecca is determined to see justice done for her brother and determine exactly how he was murdered. Problem is, his likely murderer is her new guardian. I wasn't certain about Lewis at all. As he is called the 'midnight devil' that leads you to really wonder what kind of a man he truly is.
The author did a good job with character interaction and making the story unfold believably. There were unexpected twists and turns and I wasn't certain how it was going to end but I enjoyed the 'ride'! I enjoyed her first book and she continued to entertain me with her latest, I will absolutely be picking up the next book from this author!
It was a 4/5 for me.

An excerpt from Midnight on the River Grey

My heartbeat turned sluggish as an ache swelled in the back of my throat. This man—the
person responsible for my brother’s death—expected me to live with him? In his house? Madness.
“And if we refuse?”
“I’m afraid there is little choice in the matter at this point. The arrangements are already complete.”
Mr. Browning narrowed his blue eyes, scrutinizing me, no doubt, as the numbing shock of his declaration faded to resignation across my face. He sighed. “I do realize Greybourne Hall might hold unfortunate associations for you—”
“Unfortunate?” My voice came out a bit louder than I’d expected. “Is that what you choose to call it?”
He gave a sideways glance at Aunt Jo then returned to me, a pained look hovering about his eyes. His voice, however, remained firm. “Forgive me if I startled you. I hadn’t expected such a violent reaction to what I assumed was the logical next step. Perhaps I should make myself a bit clearer.” He gave a curt sigh. “I only intend for you to stay at Greybourne Hall till some place more suitable can be arranged. Unfortunately, there are few options at present.”
Ice enveloped my heart. I had no wish to travel to, let alone live at that dreadful house, not even for a single night. In his letters, Jacob had described the rambling structure as a gray pile of stones fit for vampires, or worse. I could only image Mr. Browning, this dark-headed devil before me, at home in such a place.

PulseAbout the Book

Book: Pulse
Author: Linore Burkard
Genre: Christian YA/Apocalyptic Suspense
Release date: August 24, 2015
What do you do when the whole world stops?
Andrea, Lexie and Sarah are just ordinary teens until a mysterious event shuts down all technology. In the dead of winter, there’s no heat, no internet, no cell phones–not even a working car.
In this chilling Christian YA tale, most of the population doesn’t survive. Pitting faith and grit against a world without power, the girls and their families must beat the odds. But can they find the strength to survive when society collapses and technology fails?
 My Thoughts:
This book is though provoking. I enjoyed the way the author 'showed' through the girls how the story unfolded. There are three different worlds/points of view but all having to deal with an EMP changing the world that they knew. I had some issues with several of the things in the book, there were scenes and language that I wasn't expecting from a YA Christian book.
That being said, it does make you stop and think. If the world as you knew it ended, and you had to adapt to survive and help your family survive, what would you do. We all say 'I'd never do that' but we never really know. So, the portrayal was entirely possible, it was just surprising in parts.
It was a 3/5 for me.

About the Author

Linore_SmallerLinore Rose Burkard wrote a trilogy of genuine regency romances for the Christian market before there were any regencies for the Christian market. Published with Harvest House, her books opened the genre for the CBA. She also writes YA Suspense/Apocalyptic fiction as L.R. Burkard. Married with five children, Linore home-schools her youngest daughter, teaches workshops for writers, and is the Vice President of the Dayton Christian Scribes.  Her latest  PULSE EFFEX SERIES, takes readers into a “chilling possible future for America, while affirming the power of faith in the darkest of times.”

More from Linore

When my sweet historical romance series was published, I never dreamed my next would be YA/dystopian. What a switch in genres! So, how did I go from one end of the writing spectrum to another? Blame it on an idea that refused to die. I read a headline about how close the earth came to suffering a catastrophic electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, in 2012. We missed the worst effects of a solar flare by a hair (in space terms); but the “what if” factor had been set in motion. What if that flare hadn’t missed us? What if I was a teen raised on electronics–or an adult medically dependent on them–and it all went dead in a matter of seconds? What if the next flare doesn’t miss? PULSE, the first book in my PULSE EFFEX Series, was born.
The books shows life in the aftermath of such an event for three teens and their families. With the world plunged into a new dark age, can they keep hope alive?
