Magic Kingdom For Sale--Sold! by Terry Brooks

From the Inside Flap:
Landover was a genuine, out-of-this-world magic kingdom, complete with fairy folk and wizardry, just as the advertisement had promised. But after he purchased it for a million dollars, Ben Holiday discovered that there were a few details the ad had failed to mention.
The kingdom was falling into ruin. The dragon Strabo was laying waste the countryside and the evil witch Nightshade was plotting to destroy everything. Ben's only followers were the incompetent Court Magician, Questar Thews, and Abernathy, the talking dog who served as Court Scribe. The Paladin, legendary champion of the Kings of Landover, seemed to be only a myth and an empty suit of armor. Of course, there was the lovely and devoted Willow -- but she had a habit of putting down roots in the moonlight and turning into a tree.
To put the final touch on the whole affair, Ben learned that the Iron Mark, ugly and terrible lord of the demons, had challenged all prospective Kings of Landover to a duel to the death -- a duel which no human could hope to win.
The task of proving his right to be King seemed hopeless. But Ben Holiday was stubborn.
A gripping story of mystery, magic, and adventure -- sure to delight fantasy readers everywhere.

My Thoughts:
This book was just plain fun! Ben Holiday is going slowly insane after the death of his wife and after some odd events decides to buy this 'magical' kingdom for a million dollars. He leaves our world and travels through to Landover and is shocked to discover that it is a real magical kingdom. There were a few things left out of the description he was given, like he would have to fight a demon, but he with his trusty followers are determined that he survive all the new world has to throw at him.
I loved pretty much all the characters in this book. My favorite is Questar Thews. He is an incapable wizard but his heart is always in the right place. He and Abernathy are great friends. Ben is confused and has those two to guide him along with the River Master, a dragon, two cobalts, a witch, and a woman who claims she is 'his' and turns into a tree! The magic of the land grabs you and pulls you into the story and it has some unexpected twists that explain several things!
I rate this book 5/5. It was a fun, clean book that is wonderful to read!

  1. I read this one earlier this year and loved it. I haven't read the second one yet but really want to. I'm generally not a science fiction/fantasy fan but I really enjoyed this one. I'm glad that you did too.
